you're supposed to upon up the back of your throat (it's called your "soft pallete"- it's the part in the back of your throat that is, well, soft. the roof of your mouth is your "hard pallete"). you should
not be practicing or singing with a fake voice by any means! just try hard to be 'natural'. also, making the air come out faster and more focused might help (being breathy and letting the breath go everywhere makes it sound weak). you can do this by focusing on one little point when you sing (like a penny or something far away) and try to focus all your air there. hope that helps.
