It may or may not be....sometimes family names (surnames/last names/however you want to call them) are based upon what the families' occupations were in the past.
For example...today in class I learned that my professor's husband's last name, "Yagi" derives from the fact that their ancestors had a lot of rice fields in the past...although 「八木」 means, literally, "8 trees/wood"....if you flip the "ya" part upside down and kind of attach it to "gi" then it becomes the kanji for rice (I forget the reading for it x_x so I can't input that kanji right now)
