Composer DAI, Fed Up With Contract
A crisis is approaching Hamasaki Ayumi (26, photo), Japan's continuing reigning songstress. The composer and member of the popular band "Do As Infinity" (belonging also to Avex), DAI (Nagao Dai, 34), who has come to supply Ayu with music, has intentions to leave Avex.
Related work sources testify that, "Since making the hit song 'Ii Toko Tori', DAI seems to be getting sick and tired of Avex constitutionally demanding he compose songs to sell. Rather than making songs for singers the company chooses, he thinks he wants to find singers himself."
DAI made his debut with "Do As-" in Heisei 11 (2000). He did not appear on stage in Heisei 13 (2002), but along side with band activities, he wrote songs for popular artists such as Ayu, hitomi (29), and Every Little Thing. His work with Ayu on "Voyage" lit up the grand prize in Heisei 14's (2003) Japanese music awards. He payed 20,010,000 yen (US$200 thousand) according to the recent ranking of the highest tax-payers, and he is a hit maker earning an estimated income exceeding around 61,000,000 [yen] (US$600 thousand).
If estranged from this man with this power alone, it will be a massive blow to Avex.

I love every single one of DAI's compositions for Ayu. And Do As Infinity has a lot of really really really awesome music too! So it's kinda sucky for Avex, and I guess it depends on what this means for Avex's artists who rely on DAI. But I'm very glad for him. How many Avex-abuse stories have we heard? I hope this actually goes through.
