That's actually one of my favorite performances from Ayu because it is so unique and shows her as vulnerable.

Mine too. She looks really pretty and also for the same reasons you wrote. Plus, B&G is one of my favourite songs, and the coughting actually adds a nice dramatic touch to the song.
Also sometimes if your throat is irritated like that singing only makes it worse (especially if your technique ise't all that). I know from personal experience. =P
