I only had one music CD like that in my hands... they do make 8cm CDR discs though, and 8cm DVD-/+R discs too.
I guess they used smaller CDs becouse they didn't need to put more on the CD than just the 4 tracks. When people started adding remixes they simply switched to bigger discs.
