That is so very poetic, to use that kind of juxtaposition of happy melody with not so happy lyrics. That is seriously a completely different level of music-making...that's why she's a poet to me. I imagine it's very difficult to use lyrics that don't always match up with the melody tone/mood wise without creating overpowering incongruency. To execute something like that well is a very sophisticated form of art.
Though I'm not nearly skilled enough in Japanese to tell whether she pulled it off well, I'm willing to bet she did, seeing as how people are so touched by her lyrics. I remember reading that she became popular in the first place because people loved her lyrics. Was it in one of Masa's translations?
