I think bossa nova and jazz differ from their instrument usage and mood. Jazz is kind of somber to me while bossa nova sounds very commercial and uplifting. Bossa nova also sounds more uptempo and Brazillian I guess. Lisa Ono stuff is definitely bossa nova, she's quite awesome. I love all her songs I found so far. She also has "The girl from Ipanema".
I get confused deciding whether something is jazz, soul or R&B though.
