Well, 6 new tracks is my minimum for purchasing an album, unless most of the singles are brilliant, so I don't think I'll be picking up Black Cherry anytime soon...

Oh, it's always been the only criteria (criterion?) for Artist of the Year. Check out the older (early 90s) winners at their website:

They used to post the total sales; I wonder why they don't these days? Koda Kumi was the #1 seller last year. She just managed to edge out Orange Range (thank God they didn't win two years in a row).
And, yes, character singles don't get nominated

That's why a VERY deserving Glamorous Sky didn't even get nominated last year.
