I think that evoluseans explanation captures it all pretty well.
Some of those artists are manufactured, by people who know what the mainstream of people likes and will buy. Some manage their own breakthroughs, by simply being a bit, or very, talented, and very very lucky that by some completely random chance, the general public took notice of them and all of a sudden they're in the spotlight.
