Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I wonder if anyone could explain the significance of "それでも最後の小指外せなかった" translated here as "Even so, we couldn't let go of that last little finger."

I think what she means is that despite the sadness of a situation the narrator couldn't let go of it completely. They are effectively holding on to the other person by the pinky finger. Would this be the correct interpretation of this line, or is there a cultural significance that I'm not getting?
