What she had been drawing was a picture of his back facing her, iirc.

I'm sure that the scenes where she was interacting with him were 'real' at one point, but his actual portrait in the end wasn't drawn by Ayu. She instead ended up drawing the view of him leaving her at some point. We're probably intended to think that they were together at some point but things ended as quickly as their started.
