AKB48 breaks multiple records again; "Beginner" sells 827,000 copies in its 1st week

Popular Idol group AKB48's 18th Single "Beginner" (10/27 Release) had a total first week sales of 827,000 copies and became the top single of the Weekly Ranking of this week (11/8). Starting from "RIVER" released on October last year, this makes the 5th consecutive 1# Single for AKB48.

with new marketing strategies like tickets for big-scale handshaking events among other bonuses, it beat SPEED's "ALL MY TRUE LOVE" (released on 1998/10) which sold 601k approx. 12 years ago. giving "Begginer" the highest first week ever for female groups.

as for Female artists (including solo artists), Utada Hikaru's "Addicted To You" (1999/11 release) with 1068k, Amuro Namie's "CAN YOU CELEBRATE?" (1997/2 Release) with 828k, and now "Beginner" (827k) in third place also make the top 3 best first week sales in the overall female category.

to line up with top-class releases from the second-half of the 90s (considered as the golden-age of the Music Industry) and also in what comes to this century surpassing Utada's "Can you Keep A Secret?" (2001/2 Release, 784k) it became the highest for this century.

furthermore, since the April release "Ponytail to Shushu" (first week sales of 513k) this makes 3 AKB48 releases with over 500k of opening sales, breaking the 2-streak record Utada, Ayumi Hamasaki, and previously AKB48 held together.

until last week (11/1) comparing the total yearly income of this year with the same period as it was last year there was a 105.6% increase, showing signs of a possible market revival for singles. now with big success of this release, the possibilities look certain. its said that this means the Single Market is coming back to the prosperity.

I don't really know what to think of the comments on "the single market is coming back into prosperity." Aside from Arashi and AKB48, EVERY ELSE's singles are selling less each and every year. I guess in total these high sellers make the numbers seem positive, but if everything else keeps on falling I think you can hardly say it's a good development.

Anyway, that's just me analyzing. Happy for the girls!

I heard the song...I'm speechless that they could sell this much but if its due to handshaking events and marketing I'm slightly relieved. Then again Arashi sell a ton without these events no? I'm not cheering for any of them anyhow, lol.

Congrats to the girls! Such amazing news.

Not to be rude though, but do we really need another thread when we have one about the preorder sales here and then the artist thread for them?

^ Hahaha, that's true. Single of the year 2010 deserves the attention.

And I agree with Nackar about the whole "re-energizing the market" thing. When's the last time Ayu, who many still consider a J-Pop queen, sold over even 250k or so? I think AKB have just tapped into something special and all of Japan seems to be eating it up (and I can't blame them). No idea why they still (or ever) buy from Arashi though.

LOL I think another thread is called for. It is a big deal afterall. Still so happy about this. But I third Nacker on the industry thing. When a solo artist or a non-idol group with less than 5 people can sell in the 500K+ range again THEN I'll think the industry is back on the rise.

Yeah and that pretty much sold out early on in preorder. XD

Has AKB always done the handshake events though? From the way it sounds over at S48, the next single seems to be the first one where the RE will be without the tickets but it'll also be the first one with more than two regular types so we'll see if it has an significant effect (if at all) on sales or evens out. The next single will probably benefit off of the hype from Beginner though so we may not be able to even tell. XD

M & evolution sold over 500,000 first week and evolution came right after M.

Congratulations to them.
Beginner is probably their best song (even though number-wise for me it's success is overrated since I don't find anything special in it even though it's nice).
I prefer this over their older songs though which I don't listen to.
Nevertheless congratulations to them.

I don't think you are XD.

To be honest though, I HATE pretty much all of their output with a passion, but this song I can actually listen to! It's good a nice groove and climax, not just the standard girlgroup SQUEAKSQUAKKAWAIIII-fare.

I think I'd even like it if it weren't sung by a bazillion young girls.

Well, she fact that the PV was not alouded to be showed on TV or something like that may have played a good part on this... Considering that right now the only way to watch the video is by buying the single

^That version of the PV was not included on the single either. The only way to see the original is to buy it on Recochoku

the pv on the single are the dance version with different members as the center. it is not the full pv, like what polyrhythm said, buy it on Recochoku.

If you've actually listened to the entire song more than once and can still say that, I'd have to say that you are the one with terrible taste.
