Nothing. They were already super popular in Asia (including Japan) before they officially debuted in Japanese.

they have a huge fanbase in not only korea but all over the world. their success most likely comes from them being young, hot, and amazing entertainers/hard workers. there are also 9 of them in the group and that gives them more of a chance to appeal to more people. there are some people who only like one member but still support them and buy their cds.

Same with me, lol.
Don't understand why they're so popular.
Personally they don't appeal that much to me, but japanese people are different in taste.
Don't like their looks that much as well, don't know why, but korean women aren't that beautiful to me.
I only love Gee, but in the korean original.
For me most of the korean girl bands look and sound the same, pretty generic.
Oh for example was just Gee all over again.

this comment made me so sad. it's so offensive and insulting to korean women. I seriously can't believe you said this.

They always remind me of non-Japanese Perfume x3. As for their popularity, I think their Gee MV is explanation enough

and like identity said, there's 9 girls, so they can appeal to everyone.

and because they're amazing.

^^ AKB48 I guess, they're as popular in japan as SNSD is in Korea.

^ couldn't have worded that better

Well besides the fact that K-pop is trendy in Japan right now, they already had a dedicated fan base in Japan, their showcase was completely sold-out even before their official debut
Also, if you watch their Japanese shows, you'll notice how most of their Japanese fans are teenage girls who look up to them and like to cosplay as them.

Plus they're gorgeous, funny, talented, and each one is different in her own way
If you try to get to know them you'll see why they're so popular

btw can we stop with the random "why is kpop popular" threads ? It only gives chances for people to make rude comments about it .. All this hate is giving me a headache

They make really catchy songs. Plus they're all very pretty and talented at singing and dancing. Now if only they would write their own music...

in a few recent interviews they said it's their goal to release an album with a song written by each of them, and to compose too. both Yuri and Tiffany wrote a song for their new mini album (unfortunately they only let one get in, and only picked Yuri's lyrics and Tiffany's lyrics didn't make it). so in the future hopefully they will write more of their stuff
