Kylie - the new Barbie?

Kylie - the new Barbie?
London
January 27, 2004

Now every fan can get their hands on Kylie Minogue.

The pop princess has joined the iconic likes of George Bush, Shirley Temple, Princess Diana and Humphrey B Bear by having a doll made in her image.

The Kylie dolls went on sale in London today for STG10 ($A24) each and come in a range of outfits made famous in the singer's videos, including removable thigh length boots and even a pair of "Cheekies" from her range of Love Kylie underwear.

"For years I have been asked about a Kylie doll. Well, she has finally arrived and I am delighted," Minogue said.

"I hope fans will agree it was worth the wait as we worked very hard to get every detail right."

The Kylie doll has been measured perfectly to scale, including her face which was scanned and then made into a mould.

It also includes an apparently perfect reconstruction of her much fancied bottom.

Accessories include microphones and jewellery.

Kylie isn't the first star to enter Barbie's world.

As well as the likes of Bush and the late Princess Diana, pop stars like the Beatles, Abba, Michael Jackson and the Spice Girls have all been transformed into plastic miniatures.

Many have become collectors items, with some Abba dolls fetching STG80 ($A190), while a Muhammad Ali doll from 1976 is now worth more than STG1000 ($A2,377).

Some of the English tab mags published pics of the doll when it went on sale - it's one ugly doll. It looks nothing like her, and really is unflattering. This is one of the worst dolls from a famous person I've ever seen. It's horrendous. Swiped this from Argos site:

I think it looks more like Sarah Jessica Parker than Kylie - all square and sharp features...

How come artist dolls are always hideous? The britney one sucks, the x-tina one sucks and the destiny's child ones are horrible too! Those doll-artists all need to be fired ASAP.

Since Kylie is an Australian icon..she is still very famous here even though she spends all her time in the UK now.
I wouldn't really suspect Kylie could stay in the US market that long at all. I've noticed to stay "in" the American pop music the singer must be American themselves otherwise they don't get much of a look in. Or they are popular for a little or only noticed then are never heard of again.
