Why do people think Ayu is over rated ?

Probably because the singer isn't (technically) very good at singing - especially live, IMO. There are lots of other things she doesn't do as well done as other artists too, but I still seem to stick with her.
(She does almost everything very well rather than being the best at a limited number of things).

i can't tell the different when Ayu is lip synching or singing live...

Because she's been popular for "way too long" and people are getting tired of seeing her face everywhere. Japanese likes to see new fresh stuff, and ayu's getting old...:sigh:

She's not that overrated. She's not like Britney Spears. Britney is known everywhere around the globe. Ayu is known in some parts in Asia and just a little bit around the world. But Ayu is very popular in Japan so maybe that's why some people think she's overrated.

I think that Ayu has a very great voice and her performance are the best. I can't see much difference from live and the real song except when she does some extra vocals like la-la-las. But i think she's an amazing singer.

Yes...

She's very overrated...

People like her for all the wrong reasons. Most people love her fashion etc, and though they like her voice, I find it very irratating. The most important things of songs are vocals and the backing tracks.

I don't think she has a very good voice, at least not anymore. In 1999-2001 she had a good voice, but as good as her next thing after 'I am...', vocals pretty much went downhill...

And better artists are underrated...

For me, it's the opposite,

She used to have such a high pitched and baby voice.

She's new to me

and I not heard much about her,to me she isn't overrated and I love it!
Only heard a number of songs from her.

Not annoying but way more high pitched (mostly her first CD, the rest is good to me) than it is now. I like her voice now.

starting to feel like one of the only people who doesn't see anything at all wrong with Ayu's voice. I loved it back then and I love it now. Her voice has evolved and matured over time. Let's face it, if i didn't like her voice, i wouldn't listen to her.

As for Overrated, it's to be expected that people will say such a thing, i mean come on, she is the queen after all.

I do think Ayumi is overrated. A lot of people seem to think that if you criticize your favorite artist, then you're a bad fan. In fact, I think if you like her despite her faults, you are a true fan. I think it's important to see past the glitz of Ayumi's (sometimes) flashy costumes and admit that her singing is really not the best. Also, I kinda think Ayumi wins a lot of awards in Japan because she is popular (it's more about popularity than merit). Once Japanese fans find a new singer to attach themselves to, Ayumi's popularity will surely decline.

Ditto. I love Ayu's voice. From here first single right up until know. I don't have to confess that dhe can't sing because I honestly think she can. She certainly does not sound like other artists. But, it's her. And I love her voice.

And every popular artist is considered overrated by someone. Can't please every body.

IMO, Ayu is still popular because she has no competition...

I mean, she has competition, but she's the only artist on the market like that...

BoA - Bubblegum pop, English singing, Korean, Doesn't write own lyrics

Ai Otsuka - Very cutesy at times.

Utada - Very powerful voice, unlike Ayu's. And her music is more R&B oriented...

I can't name any artists that are extremely comparable to Ayu in J-pop today...

You're not the only one who doesn't see anything wrong with Ayu's voice. I think her voice is amazing.

I don't quite like her voice. I think her voice is more "low" than powerful. Christina Aguilera, that's powerful. I think Utada's voice is more low.
