What does Max Matsuura actually DO?
Practically everything by Ayumi is produced by Max Matsuura but what does it mean to actually "produce"? I see that it is said in all of her albums and after the credits in CDLs and Tours, but is that only because he is the one that "produced" Ayumi Hamasaki, or in other words, discovered/made her a star? What is there to "produce" at a CDL and TOUR if it is "visioned" by Ayumi Hamasaki? Also, what is the difference between composed by and produced by? How can a song be composed by one person and produced by another? I am confused...

Very generally a producer deals with the money people (record company, movie studio, network) and the business aspect of whatever creative venture he or she is producing: tv, music, movie whatever.

A producer decides in what direction an artist should go and what products to release. They decide on how the artist will look, dress and sing. However, max matsuura openly said that his name is there only as part of the contract, Ayu herself has complete control.
There are times when he does use his powers, which is obvious in the production of A BEST, A Song is Born, and A BALLADS. However, Ayu showed her own power by resinging some songs in A BEST, and writing the lyrics the way she wanted to in A BALLADS. |

Max Matsuura = avex in those cases. (well, NOW Max Matsuura always = avex after the re-organization of management.) But although ayu and max are close, max's best interest is in the future of the company as well as ayu's career. Ayu may disagree with alot of things he does, but I think she understands that "I am a product" (her words).
As for your confusion over composer and producer... In jpop, the composer just writes the melody and maybe a basic chord sequence or backbone to the song. The "producer" as we say in western music is actually the "arranger" in japanese music, the one who chooses the final instrumentation. The mixer decides the volume of those instruments relative to each other.

Ah... in America, the "producer" in name is actually the arranger. People produce songs, not artists. Max Matsuura would be the executive producer probably. (In the US Executive Producer = the one with the money behind it, who has final say in who gets hired to do what)

producer, as sum1 else mentioned deals w/the financial aspect of the cds. so he invests money into her music career and therefore the part of the profits would go to him. dont know if its already been mentioned but theres 4 parts of making a song in asia:
composer: the melody lyricist: lyrics arranger: the additional instruments, background producer: the person who funds the project Last edited by ayu_fan929; 30th January 2006 at 09:14 PM. |

" When making the song "a song is born", I told Mr. Komuro and Mr. Matsuura how I was thinking about the recent terrorisms. But they were thinking differently, as they are adults. They said they wanted to make a song to say "sorry" for not having noticed before the incident which situation the world is in now. But I said I was not going to "reflect on" my way of living before it. It's not true that I had been slack in my living until the incident, nor it caused me to think newly that I should live seriously. It's true that the incident was really shocking and stroke my heart, but I told them I was feeling that I, as "Hamasaki Ayumi", should not apologize. I was not going to say as "Let's make the world in peace", either. So I sang, "Though I can do nothing but deliver this song from such a place as this." Not in the tone as "Listen, listen", but as "I am pleased, if you listen even just a minute." ("Nikkei Entertainment" May 2002)" -from masa's website @ http://homepage2.nifty.com/morimasa/iam1.html |
