Various Ayu sales facts

I spent some time reading on avex official english page today, this is some sale numbers that I dug up.

I'm really surprised by the (extremely) high online download sales of INSPIRE, that sort of makes the single a million seller. I'd love to know the online sales of her more recent singles.

-All those numbers are the amount of copies that avex shipped out to stores, for example A BALLADS is rumored to have sold around 1,100,000 copies while avex shipped 1,700,000 copies, thus meaning there's still 600,000 copies in various retail store storages. avex (and Ayu) will profit from all those 1,7mil copies sold while the retail stores sit on a ton of unsold copies.

Why can't those numbers be entirely trusted?
-Most of those reports are from a certain year, if an album or single is released
towards the end of the year that means it will keep on selling the next year, those
extra sales might not be mentioned in the document covering the coming year.
-I tried including only numbers from as late dates as possible

Can we really trust those numbers?

If so, I'll have to update my "Total sales" thread...

ORICON sales are the sale numbers from retailer stores to the public, the CDs that go from the store to you. The numbers here are the CDs that go from avex to the store and not the actual amount of CDs that is sold to people.

ORICON stops counting CD sales when the CDs leave the charts. If the CDs has been out of the charts for several years it's possible that those numbers presented here are closer to the actual sales of the albums.

The numbers are trustable, they are from official avex press releases in English. I could link you to them.

While they ARE trustable, I personally wouldn't include them in the sales thread you have since it's still shipped to the stores and not to consumers.

I know that there are other download statistics in there, immel. I read in one of the reports that 'HEAVEN' passed the 1 million mark in downloads. However, I'm pretty sure when they mean 'downloads' it also includes ringtones and PVs, and not just the full song. Actually, a good chunk of it is just ringtones.

This seems likely, but I suspect it's only a guess? Anyhow I trust that (guess) aswell.

@asfXX - You can always include those numbers in your total sales thread aswell for the reference, as this is the actual numbers that Ayu will profit from, even if it's not the number that reaches the buyers. Could you possibly link me to that thread? I don't think I've seen it, thanks .

For the Ayu ones, it's because avex counts the number shipped to the stores. It doesn't necessarily mean that people will actually buy it. The number that we have is from oricon and they only count the copies sold to the consumers, and not to the stores.

For the Otsuka Ai one, I don't know cos I haven't seen what numbers they've recorded. btw, What were her numbers?

The reason the differences are so big for some of the albums are that the retail stores make a guess on how much the album will sell, then they buy a huge amount of copies and hope the guess will be correct - they most often are, but sometimes the copies run out the first day (causing loss, because other retail stores might have guessed more correctly and customers go there instead) and sometimes they have made a huge overestimation (this also causing a loss because of non-selling CDs taking up storage space).

LOVE PUNCH (March 31, 2004) #3 over 693,000 copies sold (97~ weeks in chart)
LOVE JAM (November 17, 2004) #1 over 652,736 copies sold (65~ weeks in chart)

These are the recorded numbers.

But the avex numbers hovered around 400-500k..

^Did you check the date of when the number from avex is from? the 400-500k might have been the inital shipment, it having sold out it's very possible they've shipped out new copies after that press release.

I think it was an 2005 press release about 2004 sales since MY STORY was also listed..

[the 1st Ai album was released in March of 04, having a number of only 400k or so..]

That's weird, if you could point out that article so I could see it with my own eyes I will totally scrap the numbers in this thread as un-trustworthy - even if they are from avex themselves.

^If you look right under 400,000 you'll see it says:
Cumulative sales from previous fiscal year: 680,000
It means the album sold 280k copies before the financial year of 2005 started, I think, and 400k copies during 2005s financial year.

That's more like the numbers you mentioned. The article is from february 2005, 680,000 copies sold. The 693,000 copies you mentioned are from the end of March .

They are a good (exact) reference for knowing how many copies that avex profited from, but they are at points very far from representing the number of CDs that reach people like you and me .

This is from the 3rd Quarter (9 months) so since avex starts its' financial year in April; it would only count LOVE JAM sales from March to December. LOVE JAM was still selling after December and that explains the huge difference.

I think we should look at only the 'Full Year' reports instead of the 'Quaterly Reports'

That's not true. Mr. Children, Utada Hikaru and many others reached million copies sold in the first week. Namie Amuro sold over 900k with 'Can You Celebrate?' and she is the biggest first week sales for a single for AVEX.
