Screwing up: Cute Ayu or Mediocre Ayu?

I think it's safe to say that Ayu touches a soft spot in most of our hearts here when she forgets her lyrics. Nevertheless, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's wondered how many people think the same way we do. Because there are always the critics, I can't help wondering how many people in Japan do love Ayu even more for her little mistakes. I can imagine droves of people thinking to themselves, "you've gotta be kidding me. i didnt pay a crap load of money to watch a mediocre performer like you screw up," or "that's LAME Koda Kumi wouldn't screw up like that!" (Koda as an example; I hardly know anything about her lol) .

It's interesting to compare our reactions to her mistakes with the reaction one would have if a renowned classical soloist made a mistake at a concert. In the one case, having fun and the expression of the performer's personality is emphasized. In the other, the greatest importance is placed upon attaining perfect expression of the piece. They are such vastly differing philosophies...well, I guess that's why you'd have to call Ayu an entertainer instead of just a singer...

Moreover, I wonder whether Japanese culture tends more towards viewing it as cute instead of mediocre. I don't think many Americans would be very tolerant if an American performer were to do it, much less receptive.

I suppose that if she were to try to ride the "look how cute I am, forgetting all my lyrics" all the time, not only would people start viewing it as unprofessional, but the act would also become cliche. I think that because she's proven what she's made of, few blame her for forgetting lyrics now and then. She's had some pretty awesomely profound performances; her attitude is probably too serious and focused to forget lyrics while singing something like Duty or Memorial Address. Maybe she forgets nowadays because she's having too much fun on stage? Maybe that time on TV with Voyage was just because she was feeling ditzy...

PS Was watching some of CDL0506 today, very pleasant surprise

i don't really understand what are you trying to say here..
ehmm..

about ayu forgetting her lyrics..
ehmm...she just a human...no 100% perfect human in this world..
all human can do is just do the best they can...

and ayu is not always forgetting her lyrics in every of her concert tours..
maybe she just has too much thoughts or stressing up over works...
she's not young anymore..i mean she will begin to start her 30-ish in another 3 years..
so..it's normal~

You're pretty into that screw thing, aren't ya? .

You already pretty much covered all my own thoughts on this matter, hehe. It's interesting you bring it up though.

I think the same. Well, Ayu often manages to just laugh and keep on singing, which makes it into good entertainment instead of a bad mistake, she know how to act on stage wether she's doing it on intent or out of feeling.

As far as I know (and correct me if I'm wrong), it's only really in the CDL that she really screw up. Arena tour's pretty much perfect since she rehearse for that tour beforehand and all that.

Personally I don't view it as "cute" or "mediocre". In CDL it's more like she's just having fun and performing with her fans without worrying about the lyrics. It shows IMO that it's more about a concert with her fans, not really something that promote an album and stuff.

And OT, but does she rehearse for CDL?

Sometimes I enjoy minor mishaps because they can make a performance more memorable, for example it might make the performance more vulnerable and emotional or more cute and fun. At the same time though, forgetting lyrics and such can make the performance seem unproffessional and memorable for the wrong reasons. As a fan though, usually when Ayu make mistakes on stage I find it really cute and funny, mostly because Ayu usually just laughs it off herself.

If you watch disc 3 of AT05 DVD you'll see she screw up pretty much during a few performances there aswell, not for any songs, but when she is to go through the Humming 7/4 moves.

But yeah, I think what you say is true, ARENA TOURS probably includes more preparations and practicing. She also tend to sing a lot of older songs for CDL performances, which means many new lyrics to re-learn.

^It is Ayu who make a mistake in that video you posted, not someone else, the mistake being it's not time for the MC yet, the MC is after STEP you . But it's very funny/fitting .

Not saying anyone else's opinions aren't good, but I completely agree with HiruNoKaze.

For example, when she forgot the lyrics to Voyage, she seemed to... not be too cute about it, but she showed that it was an honest mistake. You know what I mean?

Aha, I didn't watch the entire clip but I know which part you mean. It's the mixer guy, he screwed up by starting the intro of STEP you too early... if I remember correctly

well on every CDLs, she seems to have lots of Fun rather than serious..
but on Arena Tours, she is really serious on doing the concert...but not for the encore..because encore is supposed to be relax and fun...
Arena Tours should be really serious doing it because they have themes already...on CDLs, they don't have themes like you see the stages are designed very simple..but arena tours got concepts on every of the stages' designs..so it's not gonna be so good if ayu makes mistakes whereas she's having fun...

I don't know why people wouldn't be ok with it. They are just little mistakes and I always think they are funny. It's usually on songs she's done a million times before, so I imagine those mistakes happen because she just isn't thinking about it as much as she would newer songs - she would want to make sure she got the new songs right, but the old ones she is so comfortable with that she just kind of launches into them without a care.

She has screwed up like that. In a performance of Wind on Music Station she sang almost an entire verse wrong.

I love when Ayu makes mistakes. The littleist simplest stuff makes me love Ayu even more. And It just shows how human she is. No one is perfect.
