The Official Nightwish Thread!

Seeing as their latest album is out (and is pure Nightwish brilliance) I thought we needed a thread in which to worship them

LATEST ALBUM: DARK PASSION PLAY

First album with new female singer Annette Olzon

TRACKLIST:
  1. The Poet and the Pendulum
  2. Bye Bye Beautiful
  3. Amaranth
  4. Cadence of her Last Breath
  5. Master Passion Greed
  6. Eva
  7. Sahara
  8. Whoever Brings the Night
  9. For the Heart I Once Had
  10. The Islander
  11. Last of the Wilds [Instrumental]
  12. 7 Days to the Wolves
  13. Meadows of Heaven

the album also comes with a second CD with instrumentals of each track (not quite sure, as I've yet to purchase the album (will be doing today!))

OTHER DPP BONUS TRACKS/DEMOS ETC.
  • The Escapist [Bonus track on Japanese release I believe]
  • Reach [Amaranth Demo]
  • While Your Lips are Still Red [Amaranth Single]
  • Amaranth [Orchestral]
  • Eva [Demo]
  • Eva [Orchestral]

THE SINGLES
  1. Eva [No video]
  2. Amaranth (Video)
  3. Bye Bye Beautiful (Video)
  4. (as yet unnanounced, but they said they're filming the next video!)

So, what does everyone think of the album? I must say I am mightily impressed with this album. After hearing Eva, I wasn't too sure I liked the sound of Anette -- but she sounds brilliant on the rest of the album.

What does everyone think of Annette? I'm both an Anette and Tarja supporter/fan, I think Anette does a brilliant job, and I love the way her vocals sound with Marco on The Islander
(i'll upload some of the concert videos of Annette singing Tarja's songs later-- she does a good job!)

My favourite tracks (it's basically the whole album, but these are my absolute favourites:
The Escapist (how could they not put this on the album!?
Amaranth
Sahara
The Poet and the Pendulum
Last of the Wilds (one kick-ass instrumental, it's like celtic music v metal)
the Islander

And Nightwish are currently on a world tour! and I just got tickets to see their Sydney gig! sooooo excited! (just need to find someone to go with me... none of my friends are Nightwish fans *sigh*)

I like Annette but ONLY on Dark Passion Play. I've seen videos on youtube of her singing older songs and it hurts my ears so bad I want to vomit. It's just....horrible. It's so obvious she can't hit the high notes that Tarja does. She has to go down several octaves and it just kills the song for me. But I don't dislike Annette. I love this album to death. My favorite tracks in order are
Last of the Wilds
The Poet and the Pendulum
The Escapist *I agree it should have been on the album*
Bye Bye Beautiful
Amaranth
The Islander

The new singer, well. On some tracks her voice is drowned out by the music or just something I personally don't find nice to listen to (the chorus of Amaranth, for example). Others, like Sahara and For the Heart I Once Had, seem to suit her voice better.

Since a singer's voice is so important to me, I'm not yet sure I'll like the new Nightwish as much as the old one. I'm prepared to be positive, but I'll have to spend some more time listening to the album.

I think The Escapist should have been on the album too. While Your Lips are Still Red is a good ballad-type song.

bought the album today, and i must say, the artwork in the booklet is gorgeous! there's a booklet-page-sized piece of artwork for each song, and all seem to suit the songs perfectly!

My friend who is a huge fan just lent me their Once album, and it's pretty good! The only song I can remember though is I Wish I Had An Angel, since it stuck out to me the most. I'll be looking for more of their stuff in the future.

Has anyone bothered to check out Tarja's new single "I Walk Alone" ? Her first solo album is coming out very soon and it's titled "My Winter Storm". The first single is gorgeous from the song to the covers, to even the video. You all should check it out http://mywinterstorm.com

Meh, I liked the old Nightwish much better. Annette sounds almost pop-ish on a few of these songs.

I got the new CD. It's alright. Annette's vocals remind me a lot of ABBA. She's a good singer, but she doesn't really have a unique sound and I like singers who are unique.

i love annette, i also love tarja... i think they are two very different singers, and thus i find it hard to compare them. I think that tuomas still makes kick-ass songs which retain their nightwish feel, and that he's done a great job in tailoring them to suit Annette

and for some reason, i absolutely love Marco! he's got such a wonderful voice and way of singing -- the Islander is a brilliant example of Marco's brilliance.

and no-one has given their oppinion on the album! at least not a mentioning of favourite songs -- so what are your fav/most hated songs on DPP?

Favourite:

Sahara - really suits Anette's voice
For the Heart I Once Had - same
Whoever Brings the Night - love the melody
Last of the Wilds - beautiful instrumental

Least favourite:

The Poet and the Pendulum - I don't like the lyrics and the melody isn't enough to make up for it
Bye Bye Beautiful - too much of a grudgefest

I think the Poet and the Pendulum is one of the most brilliant songs ever created. But I'm morbid and I love the fact that it talks about "I'm so afraid...of being raped again and again...." and the "I only have three minutes to live" XD That just makes it even more cooler in my eyes. I also like the Islander and Last of the Wilds a ton. I ignore most of the songs after Amaranth and before the islander. they aren't memorable for me.

^ i love The poet and the pendulum, but i must say i don't like some of the lyrics in parts -- like that "raped again.." part, or the part where the choirboy says "in the year of our lord...." lol i think i'm becoming a bit of a prude as i grow up (or as my sisters tell me, i've started living in the victorian era )

Tarja's solo album, My Winter Storm, has been released. I have to listen to it a couple more times, but my first impression is that the tracks aren't as memorable as her Nightwish songs. The single, I Walk Alone, is good though.

I like both Tarja and Anette. It just depends on what I want to listen to. On the new album my fave songs are Amaranth and The Poet and The Pendulum. Last of the Wilds is great as well.

^ Tarja and Anette both have their good qualities!

speaking of Tarja, anyone heard her solo stuff? I'm liking I walk alone and the Tweaker remix of that song is brilliant!

I'm not too keen on tCiaran's Well yet. I can't help but compare it to Nightwish (and the music comes nowhere close to the brilliance of Nighwish), and it just makes me think of how stupid tarja was to go get herself kicked out of nightwish, but once i get over that i think i'll find the song decent.
i like the Reign.

ooh! just found a the album online! now i've gotta wait for tomorrow morning (free downloads between midnight and midday!). if anyone wants the link, *cough* (need to register, and if anyone finds it in better quality, share!)

spookshow, since AHS doesn't allow albums commercially available in the US to be uploaded and that forum has a lot of files like that, in addition to ones like Tarja's that's an import and therefore OK to share here, I'm removing the public link in your post. I have a version that I think is good enough quality; I'll see if I manage to upload it for AHS.

Edit: one of our local Finnish tabloids has an article about record sales and reviews. I don't think it's quite fair to compare an established band to someone who's never released a solo album before, but it's inevitable that there will be such articles about Nightwish and Tarja. It says Dark Passion Play has sold triple platinum in Finland and had good reviews even abroad, while My Winter Storm has already sold gold here but has mediocre reviews.
