[article] BoA’s New Album Tops Japanese Chart

Quote:
Korean iconic diva BoA has topped the Japanese pop chart once again with her new release, ``Made in Twenty.’’

She has set up a new record as a non-Japanese musician by putting her sixth consecutive album, including 2005’s greatest hits album, ``Best of Seoul,’’ in a row to reach the top spot on Japan’s Oricon weekly album charts, since her first album in 2002.

The SM Entertainment has confirmed that her fifth album finished on the top chart on Tuesday, becoming the sixth weekly No.1 on the Oricon homepage.

It was also topped on the daily charts on Jan. 17, also the sixth album in first place in a row, according to the entertainment.

She broke the record set by Japanese singers, Amuro Namie and Utada Hikaru, whose four consecutive albums topped the charts. Her record is the second biggest to put her albums on the top spots for more than sixth times among Japanese pop artists.

The album has been released a year after last year’s ``Outgrown,’’ which was released in Japan in February last year.

BoA’s fifth album has attracted attention from Oricon News as the most anticipated album of the year in Japan.

Her new album consists of 14 tracks including six new songs, ``Nanairono Asita ~ Brand New Beat,’’ ``Key Of Heart,’’ and ``Winter Love.’’

Kind of misleading since they didn't count her 2 remix albums, but they counted the BEST album. I know for a fact that Oricon does count remix albums in. And her record according to Oricon is actually 5 studio albums, so that's another reason why it's misleading...

BoA shines in Japan

Quote:
Korean singer BoA proved once again that she is a pop diva in Japan as her fifth album topped the highly competitive Oricon Weekly Album Charts on Jan. 23.

The album "Made in Twenty," which includes six new songs, was released in Japan on Jan. 17 and in Korea on Jan. 24.

All five albums BoA has released in Japan, since her debut in 2002 in the world's second-largest music market, have topped the music chart. She is the first Korean artist to have an album that topped music charts in Japan.

The Oricon Charts are based solely on the number of albums sold during the week and is the most influential music chart in Japan.

BoA's five chart-topping albums rank second in Japan, behind only Hamasaki Ayumi's eight albums that reached the No.1 spot.

BoA surpassed top Japanese female singers Amuro Namie, Utada Hikaru, and Kuraki Mai, all of whom had four consecutive number one albums. According to Oricon, BoA has released a total of 27 albums in Japan, including five full-length discs, one compilation and 21 singles.

BoA has sold over 10 million albums in Japan, which translates into a profit of 30 billion won ($31.9 million).

An official at SM Entertainment, BoA's Korean management agency, said that it was mainly due to BoA's efforts that won her such acclaim in Japan. "BoA is a perfectionist. She refuses to go onstage unless she feels that she has practiced enough," the official told The Korea Herald. "All her fans know how hard BoA practices. It was really her unquenchable cheerfulness even during grueling practices that has made BoA into what she is today."

Im Jin-mo, a pop music critic, reportedly said, "BoA has the three qualifications that a modern singer needs, dance, singing ability and beautiful features. She has plenty of potential to develop."

BoA is one of the most commercially successful artists in both Korea and Japan. The 21-year-old pop queen is said to have contributed to bridging the gap between the two countries despite lukewarm relations over historic issues.

She has outsold some of America's biggest stars in Japan, earning the nickname "Korean Britney Spears."

The Korean pop princess has also attracted popularity in other Asian countries, including China, and the United States.

BoA became the latest Korean pop star to be featured on CNN's Talk Asia., followed by pop singer Rain.
