TWO months after breaking up with J-pop queen Ayumi Hamasaki, Japanese actor-singer Tomoya Nagase has finally broken his silence.

'It's a relief,' he said in response to media queries while promoting his new TV drama in Tokyo last week. It was his first public appearance since splitting with Ayumi, and he was reportedly in a good mood, laughing easily. Both are 29.

He insisted it was a peaceful break-up, not the result of a huge fight. They were together for seven years before Ayumi announced the split in mid-July.

In a separate interview published in the latest issue of Non-no magazine, Tomoya said he and Ayumi have great chemistry together because they are such polar opposites. But their vast differences later drove them apart.

'We had many problems that we kept suppressed. We had been together for so long, but there were times when our relationship collapsed,' he said.

'Love can help repair these cracks and keep two people together, but some parts are hard to repair once they collapse.

'This is a mutual decision.'

At least it was mutual, so neither of them were as devastated as they may have been to hear the other no longer loved them. We already knew it was mutual from Ayu though.
