Secret "girly" lyrics.
A few days ago when I was talking with one of my friends who is as well very big Ayu fan. We were talking about Ayu's lyrics and I was pretty surprised and confused when he stated that Secret lyrics is girly. Cause I never thought Secret lyrics was girly...
Well, yes Ayu is a girl and of course there are songs that have girly lyrics. But I am talking about Secret here. Not like I want to prove anything to him or that something will change my opinion on it. Just curious. ![]() I always use masa's translations only so maybe it is about lyrics translation? I do not know Japanese, so it's impossible for me to say. Maybe it was 'cause of this phrase? I turned my eyes away from the girls I passed by Spoiler:

Honestly, I think pretty much all of Ayu's lyrics are very girly, hah. It's not a bad thing, they're just...girly. XP

maybe it's cause they're all emotional or something and he's a guy?
if we're gonna be stereotypical anyway lol

It all depends on your perceptions of what's 'girly' and what's 'manly.' While I personally don't like either term, I think it's less about whether or not they are 'girly' or not, it's more about if 'girly' is a bad thing.
Stereotypically, her lyrics may be girly, in any song, because they are deep and emotional. I like this one musician who writes very deep, poetic, emotionally lyrics and lots of people label him as being 'gay' or 'girly.' I don't agree with either idea. In short, I don't think her lyrics are girly. Especially this song. I don't know what looking at girls has to do with being girly. Besides, in the song context, they're symbolic for 'innocence.' What if she had used 'boys'? ![]() extra; why does it feel like it's a negative thing to be 'girly?' just like why has 'gay' become a derogatory word? Gah. I'm tired. |

I feel it's more of a "tender" thing than a "girly" thing
I don't think it's girly because she used the word "girls"

The concept of 'Secret' isn't 'girly' at all.
I noticed that a lot of her recent lyrics have been more 'girly', though. Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ probably has the most unsophisticated, 'girly' lyrics I have ever seen from her. It's probably on the level of Taylor Swift. She needs to start writing lyrics that suit her age, tbh. |

I would say he thinks it's girly because she uses feminine Japanese.

there is a really hideous song by matuura aya [ne-e], it isn't even "girly" or whatever, it's just sick. so he can think of that next time he wants to slate [secret]...

Wait. I never said that girly is a bad thing and he either.
Also if lyrics are deep and emotional it doesn't mean it MUST be written by A girl. I do not agree that all Ayu's lyrics are girly. talkin' 2 myself, Mirror and many other girly? Or from recent - rollin' it has deep meaning lyrics. Why can't guy write lyrics like these? If Nietzsche was a singer nowadays he would definitely sing something like this. lol But back to Secret, I agree that it was probably 'cause of that word girl. Because who said that boys can't have free wings of innocent child? ![]() As for girly to me it is something like these (and it is NOT BAD it's is lyrics that 99.99% of singers just won't sing): "When I painted my nails in the dark I was careful to choose something that would attract your lips" Koda Kumi - Crazy 4 U Or another one: "I will be beautiful, Burning Heart I will, I will shine brighter, Butterfly At bathtime, I see your smiling profile in frothy bubbles" Koda Kumi - Butterfly And don't even try to find this offensive to Kumi or start fight with proud Kumi fan since 2003. ![]()

Of course, since I don't know Japanese, there are other ways of speaking that might make her 'girly.' So you're probably on to something. ;D It's all about your perceptions, as I said before. ![]() |

I can't remember any time Ayumi's used female specific Japanese, to be honest. :\ And like you said, Tenez, she's actually used 'boku' (a common male specific word) on several occasions. So that shouldn't be the reason.

There is nothing girly about most of her songs...
She uses Boku a lot, and almost never speaks in female talking... Except Sunset.. Even when she uses "Atashi" in Free & Easy, it sounds really manly... |

I think it's just a manner of him being a guy =/

I think It's because Ayu comparing herself to girls she sees. That's why I also actually think that lyrics are girly, I mean it's not the type of the songs man would sing but that's not the bad thing at all.
Also I DO NOT agree that Ayu's lyrics are mainly girly. Talkin'2 myself is a great example, also alterna. I convinced that (miss)understood isn't girly, and just skip this words game with "miss" and "mis", because lyrics itself doesn't have anything that would specify sex of the singer. In Secret case she is actually comparing herself with girls she passes by and this thing makes lyrics a bit more girly then neutral. |

This is why Secret's lyrics are probably more girly than neutral, as your friend said. And on top of that, I guess some people would find it harder to appreciate the meaning in Ayu's lyrics? It's not necessarily just guys who'd find it girly, some girls might not necessarily appreciate the emotions either. ![]()
