Moments and "Kachoufuugetsu"

A band I really like called Remioromen recently released an album with an interesting title... 花鳥風月

When I first saw it I thought they were read separately as "hana (flower), tori (bird), kaze (wind), tsuki (moon)" and of course the first thing I thought of was Ayu's song Moments! She uses them in the same order too in the choruses:

のように儚いのなら (first line of first chorus- "hana no you ni hakanai no nara")
のようにはばたけるなら (first line of second chorus- "tori no you ni habatakeru nara")
のように流れるのなら (first line third chorus- "kaze no you ni nagareru no nara") [...]
のように輝けるなら (third line of third chorus- "tsuki no youni kagayakeru nara")

So then I thought well it has to mean something! So I searched online and basically 花鳥風月 is, when lined up together like the Remioromen album, correctly pronounced "kachoufuugetsu" which is a Yojijukugo (four-character idiomatic compound) which basically means to honor the elegance of a beautiful scene of nature, to appreciate that, or having interest in making it into poetry or a painting as the subject. It might be a tad off from the official definition since I translated it myself from a couple of different sites I visited but going back to Moments, it makes me like the song even more, the meaning she put behind it, she's writing a song for the person she loves that she'll do anything (and become anything [last line of Moments]) for, captivated by them as if a beautiful scenery, or at least that's what I get from it ( ). It might just be coincidence that she used those four common words in sequence but I think not.

I don't think it's a coincidence! If you read the article that Misa-chan recently translated about the song then she says she wanted to capture nature in her own way.

It was on purpose.

It's a really famous four character idiom that's supposed to represent beauty or something. I've seen it used in a bunch of different places and Ayu has mentioned that the idiom was her inspiration for Moments.

Aside from the TeamAyu thing, she also mentions it... elsewhere. I don't really remember where exactly though.

TV Guide March Issue 2004

「Together with vain for the moment of fully blooming.」

Flower, bird, wind, and moon. On the basis of this kind of image Hamasaki Ayumi created the new song "Moments". By the performance for the cm Kose Vise that she did, this song was streaming fast, and on March 31st at last it was released.

"The characteristics in the elegant melody are that when I try finding from within the stock song it isn't called a ballad or an upbeat, I arrived at this tune. The image was "Flower, bird, wind and moon", I intended to do the arrangement for it but when I heard it, it had an amazing feeling."

So that the listeners would be able to imagine many things, an English title would always be created, and having the words "Flower, bird, wind and moon" presented an empty feeling to it. The thing included in there was like the keyword within the song, it introduced "flower" against her feelings and linked them.

"There is the word "flower" in the song but it had an empty feeling to it. That's why, I also felt like living with utmost effort. When the boundaries of living, seems to bloom beautifully the most, is "living" against "wanting"? Meanwhile, it felt like the continuing to whither aspect, seems to consider the was fully blooming ... The difference is too huge, that I believe made me sad. Somehow, saying that, the meaning that's there felt like 'moment'."

Because the withering can't be seen, previously Hamasaki Ayumi said that she hated flowers.

"Nowadays, I love them. However the flowers I love are few."

Her favorite flowers are roses and casablanca, in the present time she's going to her nationwide tour and is visiting the meeting place's backstage as well, and nowadays the backstage is decorated with flowers.

"The live performance because of these days' moments, they truly can't be the same twice. Saying this I believe resembles the flowers, that's why, the backstage had flowers and I was feeling like "Ok, let's do this!"."

This tour's interval was sewed, and the new song's PV was shot. As I thought the theme she did on flower, bird, wind and moon, the image was mixed beautifully and cruelly but, the shooting scenes also had those exact feelings, and it seems that there were some difficult scenes as well.

"Again it's cold that I thought I was dying (laughs). About 27 times we did the shooting, and at the very last, I sang and was soaked by a thing that looked like mud. At first hot water was spilled over me and, the warmth that I felt was for a second that's why, I felt cold immediately. With the ultra coldness, I was clattering while thinking to myself "My trembling hand, stop, stop" but I did it in the end. And then, the performance stopped exactly and at that time I thought that I became an amazing human being (laughs)."

In the tour, at the television stage performance, with the wavering busy days, Hamasaki Ayumi also created a song and revealed it as well. She already faced forwards to the next stage and the running preparations advanced steadily.

I searched for it here on AHS but do you have any idea where the actual Japanese article or scans would be? No offense to kiseki, but the translation was rather dry and a bit confusing so I'd like to see the original instead.

Rikaichan says 花鳥風月 the definition is just the beauty of nature, not necessarily appreciating it. But I don't think that makes a damn difference in this case to be honest. I just think it'd be neat if someone from Japan on here could tell us. XD It'd be kind of neat to use it in a real sentence.

Either way though, Edge, that's an AWESOME discovery! That's so neat! THANK YOU for sharing! It made me love Moments all over again (and I stopped caring for that song a while ago...used to be my #1)!

I know it made me love it more too!

I found the definition here: http://oshiete1.goo.ne.jp/qa1785157.html

and together with what JPWikipedia says:
花鳥風月(かちょうふうげつ)とは、美しい自然の景色や、それを重んじる風流を意味する四字熟 語である。

To be honest, I thought it was something that was always known about Moments, haha.

Forum thread from two years about "deciphering" Moments in which Aga-chan mentions kachoufuugetsu.

Well it was 3 years ago and only one page so obviously not a lot of people knew about it, no? And then a lot of the people on AHS right now weren't even here at that time. /shrugs/

This song has always been out of this world and wonderful to me; I always love it more and more and now I don't think I can love it more than I already do.

It's nice to see where the basis for this song came from, since it truly is beautiful I think. To love a person so much, and to use nature to show them this, and to want to protect them; it's just so beautiful.

I've never seen oshiete goo before! Very useful! I'm bookmarking it. Though I did a search on there and seemed to get both answers, so I suppose it's just probably how you use it. Though my Norton says the website's not safe. LOL.

And I'm very glad he brought it up again! I would have never known about it otherwise, and I know not everyone is looking through the archives for this kind of random stuff. XD

True, I just thought it was something that was common knowledge, haha. I'd seen it brought up before so I was like "Oh yeah" and every time I listen to it I'm like "Oh, there's that idiom again~"...
