"You are What You Listen": Do you agree?
I was talking to my sis about this 3 weeks ago regarding on what the youth were talking about Kpop and other stuffs related to that.
And it made me realize on what I usually listen to. I listen mostly Christian Gospel music and Contemporary Christian music nowadays. I still love Jpop but I didn't listen that much lately. The music I choose is based not only what is my personality but what makes me whole as a person. What matters me most when Im listening to the music is the message of the song and not the artist. My question is do you agree on "You are what you listen"?

I think to a certain viewpoint you can definitely argue that "you are what you listen", although that really challenges whether the stereotypes that surround people that listen to different things are really true. For example, people who are not asian who listen to asian music...well, I've had to semi-defend myself at times when people have scrolled through my iPod. But for people who look at the message as well as the music, I'd say it'd be pretty hard to listen to a song that blared out something you don't agree with, even if it was surrounded by pretty music.
But you can only go so far into it..I mean, I listen a lot to Ayu, and she *mostly* sings about love, and loss, and other emotional things. But I don't necessarily agree with all the messages of her songs. So, what I'm taking from what you're saying is, that if I read the lyrics or understand the messages of the songs you listen to, I'll probably get a better understanding of who you are, and what your morals/opinions are on certain subjects..is that right? I think for the most part, you can say you can judge someone's personality based on their music tastes. But even the most depressed person can still enjoy the happiest, most bouncy K-Pop ever, right? I think you can only go so far with it. Sorry if my ramblings made no sense..it's been a long night. ![]() |

I think so, yes.
But its hard to come up with exact meanings for things because, it's so subjective. I mean, I listen to Koda Kumi. Some other person might think "oh she's a ****" so that somehow reflects me since I like her. But I might think of her in a totally different way, and believe that it reflects some other part of who I am. But if I deconstructed the music I love and listen to...I think it would say a lot about me...if I was able to explain it myself. I would never trust someone else to deduce why I like something, and what that means in terms of my personality. But people are always making this argument arent they? Even at least, on some subconscious level. It's like, you see someone's charts, and they're listening to "so and so" and it'll be like "ew this person is _______"...or "cool, this person likes ______ they must be _______". I mean, people do that all the time.
