Lately, I've started to listen to a lot of variety of music again and looking at Ayu, I think it's a big disadvantage that she only sings about her and her friends' experiences. I mean, does she always have to be so honest? It's just music after all, right? Won't she ever run out of ideas and have to sing about other things soon?
So, my quick question is, Do you think it's a disadvantage that Ayu has to write songs that are (always) personal? Isn't music something you just listen to because you just like the way it sounds? Can't Ayu just write about something as ridiculous as pink bunnies and still make a good song about them? She's already proven she's capable by singing other songs on Ayu Ready, after all, so why not step out of bounds and try writing about other things once in a while? |

I don't think it's a disadvantage at all. People like songs that they can relate to.

Disadvantage? That's a gift.
I'm glad she is able to turn her emotions, feelings and experiences into complex lyrics. She talks about human emotios and I'm sure she will never run out of ideas at all. Wouldn't like to see her singing "Who let the dogs out woo woo woo woo woo" LMAO!

honestly....lyrics are an important part of what i like about music. The main reason i turned away from American music to Japanese music because most lyrics in american music are just.....yuck. I find asian music and lyrics are much more meaningful...well..,most.

I even find BoA's and Namie's lyrics more meaningful to say... Britney's and Beyonce's. She can write whatever she wants as long as she keeps it meaningful... That's important to me...

Well I usually pay attention to music arrangement and composition first...if I don't like it at all I usually won't care to know about the lyrics. When a song is just ok in composition and arragement sometimes after you read the lyrics and they are awesome that song sometimes turn a lot more interesting and it ends up getting better than just ok. when a song is awesome and the lyrics too I really get in LOVE with it! When a song is awesome and the lyris are bad, then we are talking about some BoA's songs ahahah

But Ayu's songs have good composition and good lyrics. So why complain?

Most songwriters in bands/solo (at least here in the States) writes about situations they can relate with. It gives them a voice their audience can sometimes relate to and also a way to write better than sth they know nothing about.

This can be equated to Ayu's remixes. Take for example, Evolution. The original mix is liked by many, but when some people here the Oriental Spa mix, for example, most dislike the song soon after. It doesn't mean that the lyrics are bad, but I normally listen to a song's arrangement first, rather than the lyrics. I'm sure a song about clouds with a trance beat would interest me more than a song about a broken friendship with a polka theme. Equally important is the person's voice. If Ayu began to sound like a rabid hyena, it can totally ruin what would otherwise be a great song.

i have no clue.. really.. not about wether it's a disavantage, nor about the lyrics ^^
i understand very very little of japanese, so for me, it really doesn't matter what she sings, as long as she sings is well.

Naw.... it's not a disadvantage.
Anyway, that's why I don't really like western songs that much now, they get way too repetitive concerning sex, unanswered love letters, and even utter nonsense... |

But, when we refer to Western Music... we automatically think of mainstream western music which includes songs about... "sex, unanswered love letters, and even utter nonsense"

I do agree there are some good western artists, but at the rate the crappy ones are rising right now, I'm not gonna take my chances yet until I hear a really really good song that has lyrics that will touch the inside. Don't get me wrong, I still love a few western artists like I love ayu or any other jpop artists. |

I see what you mean. I started liking Ayu's music because it sounded good. I don't understand the music, since I don't understand Japanese (well, I understand a small bit- not enough for the songs though). But luckily for Ayu, her good lyrics match her good songs.
But what you said about Greatful days is true. Although not for me, because I liked it before the other & songs. True, some people didn't like it.
