With the right song and the right time...

Do you think Ayu could have a 300k+ selling single again? 300k today is like a million selling single ten years ago.

I think it has to be a very grand, epic, angsty ballad.
Something like M, CAROLS and Moments put together.
I've always had this feeling that the Japanese love ballads, so this will work in Ayu's favour.

Well, she wouldn't be the first japanese artist to do that... So, why not?

sorry, I don't think so. What could she POSSIBLY put out that she hasn't already?

It's not like she ever went out of style...

and people just barely buying things in this day and age...

I just don't see it. I could see her getting a crap load of downloads?

Maybe if she released some super huge collaboration album with like, all the popular people on it

The one in your avatar went from Million Seller to 49,000 total sales, back to 293,000 total sales... So... I think Ayu can do it too.

sorry but Namie =/= Ayu

Maybe Ayu needs to take a break and come back in 5 years for a whole new generation to come in. idk, but sorry, I don't see it happening.

Namie was a totally different story, though. She went from like the disco-euro-dance-pop-beats genre to the R&B and "Hip-Pop" Genre which was like a radical transformation. Also she switched out production teams, composers, and producers (etc) for the most part (not all of them) so she was able to pull off a radical transformation in her career.

I feel like Ayu has tried every genre in her career, so switching to one particular genre - for her - is nothing new really. Japanese people probably expect it and so they aren't as surprised or amazed.

I also doubt she would ever ever drop her main production team (though she has worked with different producers/composers over the years).

I think her best bet for another 300K - 1mill single to occur would be if she promoted herself more in other Asian countries.

Yeah, I agree with Emiko - Namie and Ayu's situations were very different. Honestly Namie is an anomaly. I listen to jpop artists from as far back as the 50s and really Namie is the only female artist that I can think of that actually reversed her sales after having a down period.

It's not impossible, occasionally female artists have had a hit out of nowhere after a period of down sales - Like Matsuda Seiko in 1996, but Namie seems to be the only one who was able to sustain a "second peak."

Well, fair enough, considering post-TK Namie is almost a totally different artist xD

I kinda tend to agree... I mean... The woman has just done EVERYTHING and I think ayumi's problem (for sales) is that she has over saturated the market.
When you have done as much as she has she really can't bring anything new.

plus, I think she has the potential to do it, but her fans just dont buy her stuff like they use too.

ayu just needs to dig herself out of this divorce/lonely queen thing and get back in touch with her roots.

ayu needs a MAXI single with collaborations (BIG artists of course), or maybe a ballad with a great tie-in

I don't think it's a music's matter, but lacking of good promotion imo.
Her tie-ins are quite weak (but Tales of Xilia), she didn't a relevant CM in ages neither. She can make the best song ever, but if people barely knows she's still active.. I don't know how she could sell more than this.

I agree. If she make something BIG next year, with TV-lives, magazines and CM, she may sell 300k

I don't think that will ever happens unless she releases something that can't be burnt into a computer.
And it will force people to buy it.

If she goes on hiatus, has a HUGE tie-in, releases an amazing ballad, avex hypes a lot her comeback, she does TV lives...... She COULD reach 300k
But right now I honestly dont think it will happen. I can see her selling around 125-150k if she releases a great ballad on her 15th anniversary

I do think she can.
If she release a new single with a cute ballad,a photoshoped gyaru style cover, had a grand tie-in,and some TV promotion...she can do it!

Ayu really needs the right time, right song(s), and right promotion in order to get another 300K single. Not that it will never happen, but she really needs all of those above.

For Namie, even tho she had a big bang during 60s70s80s, she did slowly build up her base again a few years before that. I think her bottom was the STYLE era. She gain her popularity bits by bits after that. Her albums sales increased each time (so QoHH beat STYLE, then PLAY beat QoHH).

For ayu... well you can see that her sales chart is forming a negative slope right now, so if we wanna see a miracle, she has to build up her base again first. Even if there's a miracle and she got a hit single, a mediocre follow up will not give her the attention she wants (or we want).

An epic 4-A side with songs the Japanese just love (so Days, Blue Bird, My All, etc with new names) with all the right tie-ins and aggressively promoted - put her on Music Station every week for a month or something. I believe she can do it...

A gimmick single like 60s70s80s with a massive tie-in that does all the work would be good for Ayu.
