Ayumi & English

I remember a while back reading somewhere that the reason Ayu never included English in her songs, was because she could best express her feelings in Japanese. Now that we know that her new ablum "RAINBOW" has English in some of the songs, I wonder what has changed for her. Maybe Ayu has been learning English and now she feels that she can express herself well in it. Or maybe Ayu's ideals haev changed. What do you all think? Learning English is the first step towards conquering the Western market. Maybe Ayu has her eye on America? What's your opinion?

Well, as someone said before, i think Ayu is not doing that well in Japan (her sales compared to hikki ) and now she's trying to expand her sellings to other countries in asia that speak english (Like Singapore for example)...Maybe not just that but I think it has some connection LOL

In that case, I do hope she had pronunciation lessons, lol! I remember her singing "getta uta ma life" for "get out of my life", lmao!

I remember reading somewhere that she realizes that she has a lot of fans outside of Japan and she knows that english is the world's common language. It's quite possible that she has been taking english lessons. This could be the same case as how we never expected her to start composing her music, and it was never told that she had lessons in composing music, and then all of the sudden, she did "M". So maybe she's just been learning privately for a while, and feels she's ready to incorporate english into her music for the better. I highly doubt she's doing it because it's been a permanent trend in Japan. From what I've heard of "Heartplace" (even though the title was a bit strange to me when i first saw it) her english sounds very nice and its fits the music. I can't WAIT FOR THE NEW ALBUM (how many times has everyone said that??? lol)

I dunno, even though Ayu might have sold less albums that Hikki, she is still doing very well in Japan. She's still selling tons of records, maybe not as much as the past, but I still think she's doing well.

I think I've said "I can't wait for the album" a total of 300 million times so far, lol. The number rises every day! haha er

Overall, I do think that Ayu is using English to appeal to the 6 (more or less) Asian countries that her album is going to be released in. Even though Ayu is a trendsetter, she is known to be unique to Jpop and to Japanese trends in general which is why I don't think she'd use English just to imitate other artists. That's not like her at all.

I think the English songs are a very smart move for Ayu. What better way for her to stretch herself as an artist. Whether or not she will actually ever try to release a western album is very doubtful, though it would rock cookies! I love Ayu so much, and I wish that the rest of the US could see that too!

Ayumi is probably just trying to expand to other people so they can listen to her. Or maybe she just wants to express herself in a new way. Who knows. I just want to hear it for myself.

It would be great if Ayu ever gets into the western market although hikki got a much better chance. Anyway, I've visited quite a few western personal websites (who are into jpop) actually commenting well about some of AYu songs like fly high, evolution etc.. They even sometimes provide mp3 downloads of some of their favourite Ayu tracks!

I think it will be a fresh new way to try another style of her career.
Since she needs breakthrough of her music, IMHO.

I wouldn't mind if she can't sing well in English, it's her will that counts.

she stands out from the rest cos most of the artists from Japan uses english in their songs...n for some reason she doesn't..
until now that is...since her earlier songs...
i thought she's quite special for this factor....among other things....

I hope that whatever direction she's going with english, she won't end up picking up any negative things from Western cultures. That's all we need for Ayu to start singing obscene lyrics just to appeal to a larger audience, but as long as her songs are as nice as they have been, it's fine by me

I doubt we will have to worry about something like that happening. I can't believe that Ayu would release 5 albums that came straight from the heart, only to release nasty trash later. Her English isn't good enough for her to go western, but it's nice to see her expanding herself and reaching out to her overseas fans.

My major concern with the English lyrics, was that they would lose their meaning and value since it's not her native language. I was worried that the English wouldn't be as deep and woulding have as much meaning as her native Japanese. Ya know? I was worried she'd start putting out silly English just so that she could have English on the album.

For example, when Hikki made the English version of Hikari, the lyrics are totally different. "Simple and Clean" and "Hikari" have totally different lyrics, and the English in Simple and Clean isn't as deep and poetic as Hikari. The English lyrics aren't nearly as nice and special as the lyrics for Hikari.

So I'm just hoping that Ayu can keep her integrity and continue to give good lyrics even if they're in English. i haven't seen the lyrics for any of the song on RAINBOW yet, so I'm still hoping the English lyrics will be deep and poetic (and I hope there aren't any grammar mistakes, hahaha)

I think its a good step for Ayumi to use English, and while none
of us can be sure what her motive in doind so was, we can
recognize it a change in her music...

Ayumi's style is evolving, I think those of us who've heard
RAINBOW can see that - and perhaps this english is a part of this
evolution. I think this step in a new direction is what really sets
Ayumi apart from Hikaru Utada! Utada keeps releasing the SAME
OLD stuff, always the same basic formal for a song "Generic R&B
Beat + Hikki = More Songs" X.x; Listen to 'Deep River', every
track sounds like its only a little different from the last, and the
album is obviously way too similar to 'Distance'.

People loved 'Deep River' and hail it as the 'best' album of the
year [that or 'I am..']. Well, Ayumi has just reset the standard
with RAINBOW - and if Hikaru wants to keep up with Ayumi, she'll
have to do something new as apposed to rehashing her old
style into new songs xD

Have a Happy Day!
~Jasmine
