Ayu in her Concert Videos

I have read somewhere that after they record Ayu's concerts, they redub her voice afterwards for the DVDs to make her voice sound clearer or better. Is this true?

After listening to tv versions and dvd versions... i have to say, i think they've stopped doing it for the most part but in her older shows she was REALLY flat alot of times. They'd engineer the vocals that got picked up by her mic, change the pitch in places, but for the most part they don't dub over them at all. They do doctor her vocals though. Less often now than 2002 and earlier.

I haven't seen the DVD of CDL 2001-2002, but what did they do about Connected? her mic kept cutting out completely on the TV version. (And Why the HECK did they cut M out? That was her best performance of the song up to that point!)

They've done it a few times, but usually because a technical problem occured during the performance or she was dancing around so much that she didn't produce a good vocal (the Angel's Song performance from Arena Tour 03-04). Generally though, her vocals are not redubbed. I've also seen her in person live and she sounded great.

well who can blame her if they did. i mean with all that dancing and singing at the same time. that's pretty hard to maintain notes and pitches with all that movement.

Hmm, but aren't the shows used for TV versions different from the shows used for DVD versions? They would use shows where she sounded better for the DVD, wouldn't they? I don't know...

Not always. For Concert Tour 2000 Act one (the one i know for absolute sure), the DVD was the same as the TV version (last show of the tour in Yokohama) and the vocals were quite different in alot of places (most notably the beginning of "Far away", where she sang different notes during "anatarashiku" and they changed it to sound more like the album version, since the final product of her improvised melody change was less than pretty). For CDLs i think they splice together performances from the first & second nights for the dvds (which is i think what they had to do for CDL 01-02, now that I think about it). A Museum is the only one, as far as I know, where they used a completely different show for TV and DVD. But for the most part, her concerts use the last show of the tour for both the TV broadcast and the final edited DVD release.

The vocals from the 2000 Act One were also different in Trauma where she had a serious squeak in the original. Taxation from the constant singing and shouting caused her throat to be really weak. They had to smooth over that note for the DVD release.

Lately, there haven't been as many edits. But, on the countdown 2002-2003, you can tell there were many places where they had to go back and smooth things out because she was suffering from laryngitis or something equally nasty. She had literally no voice left to talk when she went on CDTV End of Year Live (she apologized, saying "My voice wouldn't come forth, but I sang in my heart.") I think this is why her range has lowered over the years--one cannot sing and sing like this when ill without damage to the vocal range. Compare her 1999 lives and today and it is quite obvious the change that has taken place. While some like her new vocals, they are quite different. To her credit, she has begun using vibrato and other techniques to save her voice.
