Are Ayu's Lyrics Emo?

I was showing one of my friends the lyrics to (miss)understood and he goes:

"OMG! Ayumi is emo! She just puts emo words onto happy beats, she's such a weirdo!"

I just sat there, shocked. I never thought about it, but some of her songs can be a little depressing yet beautiful at the same time. I don't listen to emo music, but does anyone have an opinion on this?

As a listener to 'emo' music, having emo music is not just about the lyrics. It's about the tone of music, and the appearance and mood of the singers/bands. A lot of the emo bands I listen to have beautiful lyrics that could easily fit into an Ayu song, but if they were an Ayu song they wouldn't be emo anymore because of how she presents her music, and vice versa. Ayu doesn't present her music as emo, and thus I don't classify it as such.

But that's my opinion.

That's what I thought! But he wouldn't listen. So like emo is all about the presentation right?

i agree. just because she writes sad and meaningful lyrics does not mean she is emo. nothing against emo at all, but its annoying how people categorize so much as being "emo."

I agree 100%! Ayu's lyrics are beautiful pieces of written work, and calling them "emo" is really degrading, imo :/ Plus, in a lot of Ayu's sad songs, it's not like she's just sulking around. There's usually a resolution or a tinge of hopefulness to them too ^-^

Exactly. Dark and depressing lyrics existed long before "emo."

That's true. Lots of poetry is that way and that's what I see Ayu's lyrics as. She knows how to write words that make you feel down, but when you hear it it gives you a feeling of hope. You know? I've never listened to emo music so I can't really comment, but I don't see any similarities.

I don't think so.

Ayu doesn't:

1: Use words that nobody has ever heard of in a song
2: Come up with metaphors that include random everyday objects and an organ in the body
3: Express extreme confusion and restlessness

Anyway, the 'emo' genre that most of you are thinking of, is actually not considered emo by some. It wasn't invented in this decade.

Her song titles aren't very lengthy either.

i know what you mean sure some of ayu's songs are sad but they have meaning to it which is why ayu is one of my favorite singers. just because all of her songs arent about happy moments it doesnt make it emo at all.

Definitely.

If that's the case, then I'd rather listen to something "emo" than anything else.
