Ayumi reference in "Absolute Boyfriend" manga

I picked up my copy of "Absolute Boyfriend" number 4 by manga-ka queen Yuu Watase the other day and read it through in one sitting (which usually happens when I read her manga). Anyways, I got to a section that happened to make a reference to Gackt AND our very own Ayumi Hamasaki!



Though a little random, I think this just serves as another example of what a great representative of J-pop she is.

Yuu Watase is HUGE. She wrote "Fushigi Yuugi" and "Ayashi no Ceres" among several other titles.

THIS specific title, however, I'm not sure, but it's currently being ran in the North American magazine "Shojo Beat."

It's not huge like Fruits Basket but I believe it's among the best-selling shoujo, from what I can remember of following manga blogs that post monthly sales rankings. It makes regular top ten appearances.

The manga series is about a girl who buys a "lover figurine" (he's a very realistic robot who's sole purpose is to, well, you can figure it out) and the guy that you're asking about is her long-time childhood friend whom she also lives next to. He saw the robot guy do some unhuman-like things (like leaping from rooftop to rooftop) and is trying to figure out if he's even human. So he's freaking out a little bit. He has a huge crush on the girl, you see, and has been very jealous of her "new boyfriend." So he's comparing the robot boyfriend to Ayumi and Gackt since they're "too perfect to be real" as well.

There's a bunch of random references in anime to Ayu. I'll always remember the Azumanga Daioh episode when Tomo gets her hair cut short, and says "At least I can go for Ayu, right?" lol.
