The Official JoJo Thread

After everyone's favorite Cactuar brought up the creepiness of her lyrics in the Avril thread (like a second ago), I decided... hey, Miss Levesque needs a thread too. Surely she has fans here!

So, JoJo Levesque (simply JoJo to YOU) is a young pop/R&B singer. Very young - she made her big debut at age 13 with the hit Leave (Get Out). I'm sure she had other songs that were successful too. I didn't care back then. Her eponymous debut was released shortly after, hitting platinum in good time.

That was 2004.

In 2006, JoJo popped up out of nowhere with a triumphant return single, Too Little, Too Late, hitting #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The High Road, her sophomore album, was released in October to decent sales.

Praised for her young vocal talent, JoJo... uhhh... y'know. She sings. She's 15 and sings about getting laid and being in love. What can you say about that?

....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JoJo

There we go. Let's talk about JoJo. I'm going to go cleanse my mind.

Leave (Get Out) was so average and it charted so high. It was catchy at best. Subsequent singles either became a minor it or failed, yet the album shifted more than a million copies. Too Little Too Late is nice, I thought she went into whistle register towards the end.

She makes us Asians think that American's are a dirty dirty nasty fun bunch.

Seriously though, her lyrics are ok. Unfortunately, when you know her age, her lyrics come across as fake. And How To touch A Girl sounds like a title best suited for porno.

I HATED her when she started. Her voice sucked so bad. She's gotten better, though, she's got this Diana DeGarmo thing going with it and that's a compliment. I really like The High Road, and while Exceptional is absolute corn and cheese, but I love sucky generic power ballads, and Anything is grooooooooooovy.

But the thing is I cannot listen to her lyrics without thinking "A fifteen year old is singing this stuff." I blame Rihanna on her.

Seriously, How To Touch A Girl. Duuuuuuuude.

I wish she'd waited until she had more life experience and maturity (basically, until she knew what the hell she was singing about) before she went into music. Sure, there's no thrill in being an adult with a great voice, but... you also don't come across as a phony. Just because you had a crush on Billy in second grade and he traded sandwiches with you once and then went to Susie's birthday party and missed yours doesn't mean you two were in love and he cheated on you with some dirty ***** who caused your heart deep pain, JoJo.

That. Is. The. Greatest. Example. Ever.

I haven't listened to the new album yet. But her debut album was pretty dreadful, all filler and no killer. I was just reading her lyrics. It's just confusing, is she impying sexual matters or normal happenings? Probably it's the latter, but some of us are inclined to think of the former.

I was young
And in love
I gave you everything
But it wasn't enough
She "was" young? She's still young, damnit. And by "I gave you everything", I hope she didn't mean... that.

I don't think she even derserved a thread cause she's younger than and richer than me and she's famous so that automatically makes me hate her. lol.

Deric: Not to mention "I wanna see you when I wake up" on Let it Rain, where she talks about letting go of the pain from her past loves and heartbreaks, you know, when she found out that Jesse Metcalfe was too old for her and that Leonardo DiCaprio was dating a model and Mchael J. Fox was married.

I like her voice, it's good for her age (although LeAnn Rimes at 13 was INSANELY AWESOME compared to JoJo at 13, and LeAnn Rimes at 15 was INSANELY AWESOME compared to JoJo at 15, and LeAnn Rimes now... well, yeah, poor unappreciated LeAnn), the music on her new album is great, but I wish her lyricists would take a look at what they're giving her. She hasn't experienced true love. I'm 20, and I haven't experienced true love, just internet relationships and like one date. I don't think she knows what love is, or pain, and although I was a horny teenager before I hit eighteen myself, nowadays, hearing someone under 18 singing so extensively about sex creeps me out.

Kingofpop: Seriously. I don't hate the girl (but obviously she's too young for her lyrics), but I'm a good singer, damn it! I want to be discovered and become rich! (Okay, well, that would be nice, but all I really want is to make music. Becomnig rich would be a bonus if I took off.)

I am not impressed w/ Jojo's new album. All her songs R so lame and kiddygarden!!!!!! I enjoyed her first album way more than this one. Now she thinks it's going to make her an better artist by waiting til she's 21 to release her next album....Jojo, U might as well kiss you're singing career good-bye!!!

It's worse than her first album? I thought nothing could get worse than that album. Nothing stood out from it, not even the singles. A blend of blah.

Maybe JoJo got lucky in love? Although I doubt it. I wonder if she already got laid. Or if she's faking it too.

Btw, EP dude, your ava so totally PWNSSSS.

Hell, if anything, this album is miles better than ehr debut. Vocally, she's working towards something. She's very.... technical, very soulless, very perfect and clean and belty, but it sounds better than on her debut. I think it stems for her not having experienced and felt what she's singing - I'm hoping her soullessness can fade with age and experience, when life hits her and she sings this thinking, god, this happened, this hurt me, I feel very strongly about this, DAMMIT!

I dunno if she's been deflowered or not and... I... would rather not dwell on that. Hearing her sing about liking the way I do her makes me cringe.

(And thanks. This was fun to make~)

You guys make it sound like its rare for a 15 year old to have a sex life. In fact, its pretty damn common nowadays. I know of plenty of teenagers with more active sex lives than people 10 to 15 years older than them. Sex experience has nothing to do with age in 2006. Depends on the individual person.

As for JoJo, meh. She's a little too...something for my tastes. I like her though, and I think she's talented. Her music just isn't something that attracts me.

She's from Foxboro, MA, which is the town next to mine. About a month ago, I was at The 99 (it's a chain restaurant), and I saw her walk in while my family and I were waiting to be seated. My brother and I got all ecstatic and walked over to her. She was on her cell phone and was with some woman with blonde hair (probably her mother). It looked as if she was trying to hide herself, but we really wanted to introduce ourselves anyways; so we did.

I tapped her on the shoulder and she turned around, then I said "Are you JoJo?" and she replied "Yeah". So we talked for about two minutes. I told her that "I think you have an amazing voice. I saw you singing 'Too Little Too Late' on the Ellen Show the other day, and it was fantastic." She was like, "Thank you so much! You're so sweet." I was glad that she wasn't a *****, but who would be when they're being complimented? She then asked my brother and I if we were from Foxboro (which is where that specific "99" was), but we said, "No, we're from ____ (the town next over)". She also said that she was going to be shooting her next video in about a week.

Eventually, she said, "Oh, sorry. We have to go right now", so I gave her a hug (to which she hugged back, instead of standing static as I had expected her to do). Then she walked away with the woman. My brother and I wanted to ask for a picture, but we felt it might have been too rude of us after already bothering her while she was waiting. It was the first time that I had ever met a celebrity (besides Kenneth Branaugh if he counts), so it was a great experience. I couldn't help but shake the entire time. Her kindness could have been a facade, but the fact that she was kind to my brother and I was enough to make me respect her. I still haven't bought her new CD though

It was pretty cool

But what's funny is that when I went to school the next day and told my English class, about half of them were like, "So? I've met her already." Many kids in my school (about an eighth of them) claim to have met her at least once, and it's about half and half whether they love or hate her. I've heard plenty tell similar stories as mine with her being a sweetheart, but many others say that she's a conceited brat who thinks she's superior to everyone else. A few of my good friends went to a performing arts camp called SMARTS with her when they were younger, and they say that she used to separate herself from the other kids. I guess that she never had many friends, but now that everyone is dying to meet her, she might just feel vindictive against those who used to mistreat her. I doesn't matter much to me, so long as she treated me with respect.

I say, just give Jojo sumetime to grow up and find herself in music.

She own an amazin' and strong voice. I believe she could hit note like MC. (Nut you Mad Cactuar!) Sumehow she did a little like her in Too little Too late in the end.

Wow! bondingo, that's so wicked, man! How i wish i could meet her in real life too. Hehe... I would love to stalk her and wait for her to go into shower. While she can sing me her song live from her bathroom. I wanna listen to her squek in the bathroom with her song! Mummy!!!

I really love JoJo, I think she has amazing talent and her songs do ring true with a lot of people, even if she hasn't experienced as much as older singers.

My favorite songs are Too Little Too Late, and How To Touch a Girl...I think many of you guys are rather strange for comparing that title of the latter with a porno. After all, touching can be any kind of contact, kissing, a hug, a hand on the cheek...

Anyway, I heard she won't be releasing a new album until she is 18, so that means about 3 more years! I hope she'll reconsider because I really love her voice and songs.

Yep, I think she might have used the whistle register, but I don't know for sure. It's very impressive though.
