Why is "monochrome" so underrated ?

Hello folks.

Maybe the question has already been asked before but ...

I wonder why monochrome is so "underrated" in ayu's discography. I mean ... it's probably one of her top 10 songs in my opinion (maybe the best as far as I'm concern. Plus, it's part of her best-selling single !

And she rarely performs it during her concerts. If I'm not mistaking, she performed it in concert tour 2000 and Stadium Tour (and only a small part of it during a medley). That's a shame since that song gives me chills everytime I listen to it. Maybe it's a hard song to sing live ?

What are your opinions and do you regret that too ?

Please ayu, monochrome is a classic, bring it back to your setlists !

Yeah, it's just getting old. And it doesen't have the same catchy "stadium" sing along appeal that Fly high and B&G have. It's a beautiful song though.
it was on her most successful single ever, so it was popular back in the day.

true but is included in A BEST..i believe that also the most recent fans own A Best

It's probably not ever sung at concerts now since she never sang it at her older concerts, so it hasn't become a staple like SURREAL, evolution, etc. It's too bad, because I really love the song as well and wish I could see her perform it live. Then again, it's not like she can sing like she used to anyways, so the time I REALLY wished I could have seen her do it are long gone.

monochrome is such an icon of a song, specially from that ayu era, I find it much better than Trauma for example.

TOTALLY!! It sounds really amazing with the guitar!!
The trance version made me love it more, she sang it during STADIUM TOUR 2002

I always had issues with it because the ending sucks so much.
other than that it's one of the few songs on LOVEppears I can tolerate. it can get stuck in my head so much. I like the new trance version more than the original now since the ending isn't so bad~

But other than that I actually have always loved monochrome. I wish it was a little more popular than Boys & Girls because that song has always been pretty average to me...while monochrome has that dreamy, almost fantasy-like quality to it...at least imo.

But I guess it's just as everyone else is saying, it's just an old song.

The only part that I didn't like the song is the abrupt ending

Agree about the ending. I love the song but the ending is incredibly abrupt for no reason I can see. It really takes away from your enjoyment of the song. Its like they didn't know how to end the song and said 'hey lets just record a guy complimenting Ayumi and stealing the demo tape to make it sound cool'

Actually... he's not complimenting her at all. He's saying "yeah, right" in a sarcastic voice, and knocking the tape/CD down before leaving the room. Essentially he's rejecting all the lies that the song is telling itself. The abrupt ending on the single version serves the same purpose -- the song is cutting itself off from its own deception.

I see someone answered that already though -- whoops! That's one of the reasons I love monochrome so much. Someone also mentioned that LOVEppears feels like an oddly cold album, and I have to agree. Even though the music can be wonderfully upbeat, the lyrics on the album as a whole have always struck me as rather poignant and pained. It's like the Ayu on this album is keeping herself locked away from something, which makes the title and implication of it (Love appearing) rather contradictory and fascinating -- but now I'm rambling.

I'm so glad she's singing it on this tour! It's a lovely song.

She once said the idea on the title is of something that appears to be love, but isn't... The cold tone really fits it
