Is Ayu a Guilty Pleasure?

Just wanted to ask, do you think Ayu is a guilty pleasure for you?

Personally, I don't believe in guilty pleasures

Hm, not really... All people I know well know that I like her and Japanese music in general. If people I don't know too well ask me what music I listen to, I usually don't bother to tell them. I just say, 'stuff'. I don't feel like hearing people try to imitate what it sounds like and fail miserably.

Since the hip-hop scene is very very popular here I dont really confide in anyone; not even family. It's funny when people hear "japanese music" and automatically think some sort of traditional sounding instruments or think it's the same as Chinese music. I dread the question "What kind of music do you like?" or "whats your favorite band?" Since, well, I don't listen to any sort of american music and I don't really feel like hearing any sorts of misconceptions; add to the fact that I am very, very self-conscious. So yes, she is a guilty pleasure for me.

Ayu isn't a guilty pleasure for me.

When I was in upper level (school) a few years older boy sent me some of her music. Japanese music and language was new to me then, but well, after listening to Evolution, Surreal and M (and Siam Shade's Setsunasa Yori mo Tooku e!) a few times I realized how good it was.

Now I've listened to her music for over 2 years and I really don't care what others think about it. I actually have some friends who adore Ayumi as much as I do. :)

My sister actually played Ayu's music at her school and we were both very suprised when all the girls on her class said: "Wow, I like this song. Who is she?" (and the song that was played was M, of course)

At the moment Japan and japanese things (music, anime, styles) are quite popular in my country. I still want to remind everybody, that I don't study japanese and listen to Ayumi Hamasaki because it's "in".

that´s exactly how it is where I live too but I don´t feel ashamed to listen to her music I even try to introduce ayu´s music to my friend and prove to them that J-pop isn´t some kind of "traditional intrument " music and that the vocals are "ching ching chong chong" XD

well some ppl know I'm listening to japanese music, but its not like I run around telling everyone. those that do know I am listening to it simply dont care most of the time anyway...
so I dont bother trying to convert them

Yeah most people seem to think that japanese sounds almost the same as chinese. A friend of mine thought sasuke's miracle was sung in italian. lol. Most people think it's some kind of eastern european language. Another friend of mine thought "game" was sung by t.a.t.u

That's what people do when I tell them something like: "I like Ayumi Hamasaki".
I hardly listen to english music anymore, since I dont find a lot of singers that I like there, So I usually say: "I like asian music" or "Rock/Pop."
Occasionally, one of my friends will like Ayu's music and ask me to lend it to them .. but rarely.. xD

Yes.

I'm not a huge Ayu fan, and don't listen to her very often.
She is pretty well the last performer I'll mention to my friends, or anyone who asks for Japanese music recommendations.

Yeah...Ayu and SweetS are my guilty pleasures.

Ayu's not a guilty pleasure for me. I barely talk about music with anyone because I really only favour a few artists now, I'm not really a fan of anyone these days, the rest of my music collection is just things I like to listen to. I rarely listen to anything new in English, and no one will know what I'm talking about, I don't really talk about music with anyone because of that.

I have never felt ashamed of listening to ayu or any other type of music. I listen to in the car, my family listens to it. My friends think i have bad taste in music but that doesn't change my opinion. I don't care what others think of me just because i listen to different genres of music. If someone asks who my favourite artist is i say 'ayumi hamasaki'.
