I'm so happy, I want to join the band

just quoting Led Zeppelin there (good luck figuring out which song).... I am announcing that I am going to become serious and am now starting a band. I will actually put ads up at the uni and see if any one is interested. I will keep you guys posted on how it's going, and hopefully, I'll be able to form a band that actually does a gig this time

well my first band was called the Nobs and my second very short stint was A Boy and His Guitar- alas, the first one never made it to gigging, and the latter never even made it to practicing... I'd take you Grass Monkey, but I'm looking for musicians in my area- you know, to form a real life band that can go on gigs- and sure I'd take you rainbow lol- but yeah, we'll see how the band goes if and when it forms- we'll decide the name together

I am still looking for members for my band. I have a keyboard player (my soon to be brother-in-law) and of course me on guitar. I have ads up but so few responses. And the responses I have gotten were punk ''musicians''. Ugh! I am trying to get in touch with the drummer for one of my former bands. But so far no luck.

Oh, and I believe that quote is from ''Celebration Day'' from the Led Zepplin III album.

lol i'm afraid of the punk "musicians" too peruvian- I'm not that worried though, because I see people on campus with acoustic guitars all the time- the relation between a punk guitarist and owning an acoustic is very small- most go right to electric. so I hope that means there's a lot of real guitarists and given how many bands are in the area that means that most of them aren't in a band, and might be willing to join mine. as for punk, i don't mind that kind of rock, but i want to focus more old old rock, like the beatles, or the bands the beatles used to cover. I don't play power chords, I play real music. but I'm not worried- i'll post ads and see the response...... oh and yes chireresu, if you look in some other threads you'll know that I do play the guitar (a lot more than I should probably) me and peruv both know several styles, although I don't think the 2 of us would agree to the same type of thing, because I'm not as interested in writing prog rock, i'm more the older pop-rock and blues-rock

See that's my problem. I want to play progressive rock like Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, King Crimson, etc. And punk ''musicians'', I use the word ''musicians'' very loosely in reference to that style because they usually only know three or four chords and base an entire band on just those chords. And there are just too many of them out there. And I mention Yes or Rush to most of the responses I have had and they more or less cringe.

I was right about the Led Zepplin quote wasn't I?

And you are right, while me may not agree on what styles we play. I do respect the Beatles for what they did for music. In fact many prog bands are heavily influenced by the Beatles. Even one piece I am working on has a kind of Beatles vibe to it.

oh i didn't see the quote part- yes you are right, it was "Celebration Day" by one of the greatest bands ever (as is Pink Floyd, and of course, the Beatles) I'd love to play like pink floyd, but I only play what I write like, and I write like me, not like Pink Floyd. I only say the Beatles, because that is the majority of covers I know, as for my actual music, it's not like anything I really know- it's just rock.
and I agree with using the term loosely with punk "musicians"- I'm sorry, but there is A LOT more than just power chords in the world- the only power chords I use are the ones formed with the top string (since I have it dropped a step- sure it makes it stupidly easy to play- but it's more of a challenge when I play a series of power chords rather than the standard punk play A5 X times) otherwise, the only other uniqueness is my fondness of the capo, which I do use somewhat regularly to change the key of my guitar- some people would probably call it cheap, but I think it's absolutely wonderful, and allows you to play impossible chords

Actually calling a capo cheap, is almost like saying that about pedals. I can't think of any guitarists that don't use pedals regardless of genre. As far as covers, I don't spend a whole lot of time working on them. I do a few. I picked up a guitar to write my own material. I know covers are a necessary evil especially when playing clubs. But I left a band because I was sick of playing Nirvana covers. But the extent of my covers are pretty much a few Black Sabbath songs, some Pink Floyd, some Metallica, some AC/DC, and that's about it. I just prefer to spend more time working on my own stuff. Since my style is progressive my songs tend to run in excess of 8 minutes, I spend a lot of time on it. One of mine my step-dad says sounds almost like Tool. Which I look at as a compliment. But I wasn't intentionally trying to write a piece that was a Tool clone. It just came out that way. For comparison, if you are familiar with King Crimson or Porcupine Tree, that is kind of my writing style. Kind of broad, kind of atmospheric, yet still heavy.

yeah I've written some things I could see Tool writing.... especially during the month I dropped my E string to match Tool's guitar of course, the similarities weren't intentional- first thing I did when I got my guitar was try to write stuff- I play covers only because I find them fun, so naturally I only learn songs that I would enjoy playing- hence why I don't do Metallica covers as much, because they can get real boring, especially the heavy reliance on power chords.... as for lengths, I never finish a song- all my stuff are verses without chorus or chorus without verse- kind of like the beatles were lol- one member wrote one part of the song, the other wrote the other part most covers I know are Beatles, Nirvana, very little Led Zeppelin and Chuck Berry, Black Sabbath (almost all the way through the solos too), very little Pink Floyd and AC/DC and Aerosmith- I mostly just like experimenting with Blues and chord progressions really

I am not totally against the use of power chords. When used in moderation they are okay. But so many bands out now use them to death. They can create an interesting effect especially in heavy music. For instance if every guitarist started using artificial harmonics (pinch harmonics) constantly, it would become like power chords. An overused technique. The technique in modern rock that annoys me right now is this whole thing where the guitarist plays 5 or 6 notes then rests for two beats and plays the same 5 or 6 notes again, and then repeats it through the whole song (with the exception of the chorus of course). Practically every band out now is using that one to death.

I don't know- I'm not completely against them, but unless you're using heavy distortion, you can make the song sound more unique by playing minor, major, 7, add9, dim, and aug chords rather than power chords.... as for heavy distortion, power chords are best, since the other notes don't sound as cool with heavy distortion- and even then, when I do that, it is chord progressions (like tool- it's several different power chords in each bar rather than the same one) I'm very fond of blues shuffles- they are easy to play, and yet no big band uses them as much any more- they're very fun to play, especially when you experiment and play other notes besides the standard ones.... I don't know, I just think the Nickelback and punk bands are too overrated, as are all the incubus clones.....

Yes, I would. As I don't have a record deal and it would be a good way to get my music out there. My problem with downloading mp3s is when people download entire CDs that can be purchased. To me that is stealing. I am planning to have some of my demo versions online this summer hopefully sooner. There are no vocals on them, just basic guitar tracks. I have had several people online express interest in hearing them, so I have decided to work toward putting them up. That is of course if I don't have a band together by then. If I do, I will hold of on putting them up and put up demo versions of the whole band later.

I actually have a few song snip-its recorded- the only real problems is that they are all really short, and for the most part, still need the addition of all the other instruments... the only really interesting one is the recording of the opening to "Fur Elise", but I screwed up in it, as I do in the other recordings. I find that I tend to mess up more when i'm recording, because I'm trying to make sure the computer is recording at the right volume and what-not.... as for sharing, i probably will, but not everything- there's got to be a reason to buy the cds especially since I'll see if I can have some of the proceeds go to Youth Against Cancer (never heard of us? check out www.youthagainstcancer.org ) and well, to give away free would be stealing the money yac should be getting.....
