Why are these songs popular and successful?

In this thread I don't mean to insult anyone. This is just my view on this...
But HOW in the WORLD are songs like My Humps, London Bridge and Sexyback popular? I mean, itz all about sex and skankiness and bad lyrics... I just don't understand...

Those are songs for the clubs/dancefloor

Lyrics don't matter when it comes to dance songs. It's all about getting down on the floor.

And people love to dance, that's why those songs are popular

Being drunk enough on the dance floor ... those songs rock.

Well, sex is something pretty enjoyable, and skankiness... it's an issue people talk about a lot, so bringing it up in lyrics could help it to sell... which it obviously does, in those cases.

They attract a certain kind of listeners, a group that's pretty huge. I don't enjoy those songs particularly, they can be nice in the club, although I prefer to go to clubs that plays other kinds of music, apart from that I don't care about them at all.

They're catchy. They stick in your head. They're simple to follow and easy to sing to.

That's pretty much it.

yep, exactly. they're catchy. they get stuck in your head and you find yourself singing them whether you want to or not. the lyrics don't really matter in that regard. and catchy means that people buy it.

Haha, that made me laugh

I can enjoy these songs for now (SexyBack, My Humps, London Bridge). They have a nice beat, but I won't buy them.

In a year's time, I will have forgotten that they ever existed.

I prefer collecting music that I will always go back to.

I don't see nothing wrong with the lyrics in Sexyback but My Humps and London Bridge takes the word "skankiness" to a whole new level!!

I think it's because of the 'beat' that is in the music. Those songs just make you wanna sing and dance and move to the music. I love them

i second that ... they don't really have something to think about ... just dance to the beat and get drunk (but don't drive afterwards *gg*)

By some reason I often get the feeling that people who consider themself 'serious' hate this kind of music.

I'm serious.

@Immel; yea I think that's kind of true.. Because if you REALLY like objective to the quality of this kind of music, it's not exactly seriously 'good'.. But it's just very very FUN to listen to these tracks. I'm a fan of almost any type of music, so it's no surprise I just LOVE songs like My Humps etc. It's just awesome =)

I'm relieved my post was received the way I wanted it to.

I agree with you, I can also enjoy 'songs like those' if I somehow get addicted to them, by going to clubs or for whatever reason.

Usually I stay away though, I simply have no interest in those artists.

Its all about the music I suppose, bumb and grind and all that jazz... They all have the tendency to stick in your head, even if you don't want them to.

London Bridge is good? My god, I think it sucks.

They are only popular because they are used alot in jokes.

All 3 of those songs stirred up lots of jokes, thats what makes them so successful

Thank you - been wondering the same thing! If I were in a club, there's are a lot of dance songs which I would like to hear and My Humps, London Bridge & Sexy Back are not any of them! I think I'd prefer some Faithless...or Girls Aloud. Really don't get it either!

"STEP you" is something fun to listen to that makes you want to dance and sing. "London Bridge" and those kind of songs are just plain annoying.

Those 3 aren't bad at all. It's all a matter of taste. London Bridge, My Humps and SexyBack uses repetition a lot but still manages to sound so irresistable. Especially the SexyBack chorus where JT repeats the same thing many many times. Or "My humps, my humps, my humps, my humps, my lovely lady lumps, my humps, my humps, my humps". And "London London London, be going down now, London London London, be going down now". Maybe that's why you don't like em?

Aside from an excellent beat, I find these songs rather creative. Lyrically, "My Humps" is an amazing work.
