I've always been questioning this.

is it her lyrics?
her songs?
her voice?
her as a person?
her fashion sense?
the way she looks?
all of the above?

I personally don't know myself why she's famous.. just that she is

for me, i love her because her song, and then i know her as a person, then i know her lyrics meaning, and then i love her voice and her creativity, so she get a whole package

You're not totally wrong you know.

Also she is very very cute. I don't think she'd become that big just because of lyrics/music/sincerity. She could've easily been a med-popular idol just because of her looks. Don't forget it was her looks that made her discovered in the first place, not her "deeper" aspects.

That's what made me start listening to her. Two years ago I saw a ViVi cover with ayu on it and she had something hanging from her mouth (I think) and her eyes were HUGE! I was like whoa!

I think it has a lot to do with her upbeat music, appearance, cuteness, and lyrics....
Another good point that zoomzoom made was she's hardworking...and Japanese do in fact admire that.

i would say it's her marketability
her ability to change
and her ability to make less-mainstream music even though she is mainstream

Mostly lyrics and her honesty.

I think a lot of artists don't succeed that well in Japan because they sing about stuff they haven't even been through..
