Apocalyptic songs??

Some ayu songs have really strong meaning, sometimes that much that they give me shivers...

specially "Duty" and "I am..."

Duty

Everyone is convinced
that that "thing" they're searching
for is in the future.
But how many people have realized
that "it" is actually in the past?
I can't even guess.

I saw the end of an era
with my own eyes.
But I didn't want to know
that it's my turn next.

If, after simplifying it
a bit more, you think that "it"
merely connects and arranges memories,
then wouldn't everyone
already have "it?"
I want you to realize that.

I saw the end of an era
with my own eyes.
And in truth, I actually
do know that it's my turn next.

You'll find me, won't you?
I'm betting that
you'll find me.

I saw the end of an era
with my own eyes.
But I didn't want to know
that it's my turn next.

____

I am...

Listen closely, because I'll keep screaming until you understand:
I've been here, here, here forever.

What is at the end of these half-tiresome
days that are chased by time?

Is it funny to you that I'm rushing
through life? Go ahead and laugh.

I want you to stare into my eyes and say my name.
I want you to hold my hand and tell me it'll be ok.
Help me; if you don't, I don't think I can make it.
If this is a lie, then at least keep the lie going to the end.

I entrust my body to the flow of time.
Where will I wash ashore?

Despite my faults, will I be forgiven?
Please tell me.

Please understand, that's not what I'm saying.
Please notice, this isn't what I want.
Please let me go, I don't want to go there.
I've been searching for just one word.

I want you to stare into my eyes and say my name.
I want you to hold my hand and tell me it'll be ok.
Help me; if you don't, I don't think I can make it.
If this is a lie, then at least keep the lie going to the end.

Please understand, that's not what I'm saying.
Please notice, this isn't what I want.
Please let me go, I don't want to go there.
I've been searching for just one word.

Ayu got that connection to music, that with her lyrics she can express all her thoughts in a 100%. I'm sure she got an spiritual connection as well.

Do you think the lyrics of this 2 songs are press to us to change our living in this World? to make our lives "meanful"?

After all the problems that we are having as human beings, global warming, politics, poverty, etc. Do you think that people like Ayumi Hamasaki are in this World to save it??

What do you think?

IMO moments and memorial address is the most amazing lyrics from her!

I thought so, too! XD I was like "Whoa, so the next Acoustic Orchestra album will be done entirely by these guys...?" I wish

Duty makes me feel really unsettled.. it's almost a little scary, you know? I never personally got that vibe from I am... though. That one seemed more personal to me.

I agree with evolusean, though, in that she has other songs which specifically address the world around us and either our places in it or what we can do to change it. I'd like to add on Mirrorcle World to the list, too, as I (personally) don't think it's solely a personally introspective song.

Maybe she did, either way I think it's leaving her now, it's the emotion and inner pain that brought out such feeling, the relating to people. Now it's like ,"My heart is broken so I'll resurrect and meet up with you and forgive you, yet you don't have to forgive me... What in the world..."

I really got shivers when I listen to Mirrorcle World nowadays. That song just has it something on it. It just... I don't know, but it has awesome lyrics.

And I agreed with Duty and I am... because those two really have a strong hidden thing in those. I like songs like that wrong Ayu. She should write something like these two again. <3

I really like Duty. The song really fits well with the lyrics. I am... is a very powerful song as well. Maybe Ayu can release something like them again.

I agree that many of her songs are profoundly meaningful, but I don't think Duty or I am... are about anything apocalyptic. They're personally introspective, rather than socially reflective. She does have songs, however, that are about (or that mention) the state of the world. Some include:

everywhere nowhere
A Song is born
Free & Easy
no more words
forgiveness

forgiveness is an introvert song, not about the state of the world. o.O Well, kinda, but also more about herself.. than.. say, A song is born.

my name's WOMEN, Mirrorcle World, A Song is born, Duty and Free & Easy come to mind when I think of songs that are about the state of the world. :3

Also since when is I am... about 9/11? I thought the song was introvert related, and I still do when I read it. The album cover was changed because of I am, and no more words, everywhere nowhere and A Song is born were written because of it, from what I remember. It's also why the Stadium Tour has an American theme..

Yeah, the cover for the album (I am...) was changed. They added the dove to symbolize peace. And it's said that "A Song is born" is the song written with 9/11 in mind.

But, yes, I agree that "A Song is born" is a great song that is truly meaningful. You guys have all said it already and I agree with you: "everywhere nowhere," "Mirrorcle World," and "Free & Easy."

forgiveness isn't introspective at all! It's very much talking about society; you could argue that she speaks inclusively (meaning that she includes herself in her critique of the world's behavior), but it's still social commentary.

Here are the lyrics:

Quote:
At times
We cannot help
But make mistakes.

Meanwhile,
As if we are
Objective bystanders,

We start walking onward,
Acting like nothing ever happened.
But it sticks with us,
Even to this day.
The fight does not end.

Surely everyone did it to protect their love.

We are all
Nothing but little dots.
Everything is.

If, someday,
They all connected
Into a line,

Even if this place is just a little clump
Floating through the sky,
I am sure we would not
Give up tomorrow
Without fear of fighting.

Surely everyone will do it to protect their love.

We start walking onward,
Acting like nothing ever happened.
But it sticks with us,
Even to this day.
The fight does not end.

Surely everyone will do it to protect their love.
Surely everyone wants to believe in something.
The song talks about how we, as a people, have a tendency to behave selfishly because we are too lazy or self-involved to care about our fellow man. But she poses the idea that maybe we do so in order to devote ourselves to the one person/thing we love the most, rather than to a stranger. The song is asking for "forgiveness" for such selfish behavior, saying: "I've committed sins, and wronged my fellow man, but all I wanted was to keep my love."

She continues on to ask that we (the "dots") work together (form a "line") and act as one people for the greater good, rather than a billion individuals acting on their own selfish desires. She says that we would be stronger that way to fight for what we love, rather than constantly fighting alone (against each other).

I agree!

but I'm sure that she reflects her feelings and lyrics into the society and what its happening/happened around the World.

She felt shocked after the 11.09.2001. She thought it was a movie, etc. I'm completely sure that many thoughts came to her head, about human existence, etc.

from that she wrote "I am...", A song is born, etc.

and maybe in someway she does "personal introspective", because that is the only way to put herself into the position of other human beings.

Duty, I am..., and many other songs are wrote to the people, what she wanted to say and what she felt in that moment, for me theres something out there, maybe in our own minds that inspires the "apocalyptic songs". Our own existence is apocalyptic.

BTW I like the divine lyrics in Free & Easy with the prayer to God part / God talking part..<3

Aw, forgiveness is so beautiful. I wonder why it wasn't very well-received.

^I Guess it isn't exactly her usual mainstream pop? No idea. Personally, I loved it.

Ayu's lyrics are extremely powerful. I love them. Memorial Address lyrics are by far my favorite lyrics from her.
