For those wondering what the criteria is, the albums will be ranked based on a combination of sales, artistic merit & creativity, and the effect they had on jpop that came after it (like alot of melodies by globe have been ripped off or only slightly modified by other groups). I actually have most of the list done at this point after doing a point-system ranking based on the aforementioned three factors, so expect the list up soon. ^_^

I'm wondering, what exactly is considered as Jpop for this list? I mean, does it have Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and stuff like that? And maybe even more obscure stuff? Or just really mainstream things?

the most essential would be almost all of namie's early albums i would say because i remember reading some where that she had sort revolutionized jpop from what to used to be what it is now, the it would be ayu's loveppears, duty, song for xx, then hikki's first love and mika's love album, m-flo's exp expo and planet shinning, Bonnie Pink's even so, present, heavens kitchen, BoA's Valenti and Love & honesty, i think everyone should have at least one album by these artists. i dont think it should be based on combined sales, because there could some really good albums out there dont sell well, in the music industry things dont usually sell well because its good, usually there some other factors thats are just stupid.

I'm not sure which albums exactly, but these artists should be included:
Fukuyama Masaharu - #1 best selling male solo
SMAP - boyband's been going strong after 10+ years
Ryuichi Sakamoto - most famous Japanese musician in the west
Toshinobu Kubota - godfather and pioneer of Jr&b

Umm...I think people should post intelligently in this thread. It's not about which album *you* think is essential!! Hardly any artists has produced two or more albums worthy of this list.

90% of artists (I won't name any) today won't be remembered in 10 years time...how many people knows who Maki Oguro is?? Yet she was one of the top ten sellers of the 90's. Shows how quickly people forget.
