^ Because of the annoying way that Universal is promoting them with, ~THESE KOREAN GIRLS WITH GORGEOUS LEGS .. OH, AND THEY HAVE GORGEOUS LEGS~
Not a word about their singing and dancing .. No wonder people get the wrong idea ..
Sooyoung herself said she was worried because they only focus on their legs/looks instead of talent

because i was introduced to snsd by my friend sending a youtube link to me saying "nice legs" and ever after, there were more discussions on legs than songs/ choreography.

The current Korean wave that Japan is riding at the moment contributes too, which is why we are seeing a lot of Korean acts invade Japan and finding success lately.

Girl groups are already popular in japan, and the fact that some of these girls are hot (a lot sexier image than AKB48) helps a lot. Plus, they can actually sing for the most part and they make catchy music.

I've read somewhere that Japanese women thinks that Korean girl groups in general are edgy and sexy and that's why they buy their releases.

If you add ayu+namie+utada as a group when around 21 then they 3 could easily defeat SNSD lol
(though the genre will be confusing =.=)

I would actually die laughing if I saw Ayu, Hikki, and Namie perform in a group. That would be absolutely horrible.

Yup just like everybody said SNSD are beautiful, truly lovely, talented, hard-working, versatile, fashionable and 9 members is like they come in all flavor.
It's impossible not to like at least one of them to bits.

+ The way i see it, most female artists today play it tough, dark, a little too sexy... SNSD are fresh, sweet and simple. I guess everyone (esp Japanese pple) like that type of girls.

And unlike so many... they can dance, smile and sing at the same time because they're complete entertainers. A dream band.

They're highly popular, but inside Korea not so much sales-wise. When I mention sonyeoshidae my Korean friends laugh at why I would like them.
Most artists in SM (sorry but this is true) make most of their money from merchandise and not so much through the music.

^ Seriously I don't know how Korean groups manage to make decent video clips with such low sales!! but I doubt they get the money mostly by their merchandise, maybe the concerts but they have to have lots of different items to sell for their profit to come from mostly their merchandise

^^ um.

Quote:
The top 10 best selling female Korean releases of the year. Sales period accounted for is January 1st - November 19th

1. SNSD - Oh! + Run Devil Run 178k (album)

2. SNSD - Hoot 85k (mini album)

3. BoA - Hurricane Venus + Copy & Paste 61k (album)

4. 2ne1 - To Anyone 52k (album)

5. KARA - Lupin 24k (mini album)

6. T-ara - Absolute First Album + Breaking Heart 20k (album)

7. Lee Hyori - H.Logic 17k (album)

8. f(x) - NU ABO 14k (mini album)

9. Gain - Step 2/4 11k (mini album)

10. Wonder Girls - 2 Different Tears 10k (single)
(passing 100k is great in SK since a lot of people buy the songs via digital music stores instead of the physical release)

Also no offense but your Korean friend =/= the South Korean population, that's like saying that, say, AKB48 is not selling well/isn't popular because my Japanese friend doesn't like them, when we all know that's not true according to charts and overall media exposure.
