Ayu does have a lot of star power, and surely helps that compnay sell a lot of things.

I think there's a mistake in the money translation, looks to me that it's $10,000,000 yen, which makes it less than $100,000 USD per CM.

For those interested in just how much Japanese celebrities get paid for their work in TV commercials, a copy of the January 2003 issue of Nikkei Entertainment will provide the answer. The magazine offers a list ranking the 150 Japanese celebrities with the most lucrative commercial contracts--and plump packages they are!

At the very top of the list is SMAP. The group can charge a whopping 120 million yen for a commercial. Nine celebrities are in the "ichi oku" (100 million yen) category, including three sports figures: baseball star Ichiro, marathon runner Naoko Takahashi and soccer idol Hidetoshi Nakata. Rounding out the top nine are Akashiya Sanma, Downtown, Ken Takakura, Ayumi Hamasaki, Sayuri Yoshinaga and Beat Takeshi. Even those at the bottom of the top 150 list, such as Hanako Yamada, can get 15 million yen for a commercial.

Looks like 100 million is the correct figure after all.
