Once my friend was trying to play Ayu on a last.fm playlist and this HORRIBLE cover came up. It was GAME and we got about 1/3 of the way through before we realised that no, his speakers weren't broken, the singing was just that off pitch and scratchy. We turned it off quickly and never spoke of last.fm playlists again.....

I listen occasionally to "abottchen" the piano duo who have covered lots of Ayumi Hamasaki songs by ear. They are pretty good. But that's about it.

Covers never do justice to original versions. I rarely like those, especially if the song is really special to me and I hear a cover I go like, "NO, YOU CAN'T RUIN THIS SONG!". So covers are a big no to me.

Sure, I listen to them from time to time, especially since I like to cover Ayu myself :-)

Same

I prefer acoustic/instrumental covers.
Some are really talented but their accent make me cringe (unless they're japanese fluent speakers or native speakers of course) or they translate lyrics. That means ruin the song 99% of the times

Just when they are good and have some personality to it... I really dislike when the person tries singing just like the original artist did.

I will get some links...

I'll occasionally come across some covers and I only started listening to them because I've realized that there are just SO many on YouTube and I figured that at least one of them had to be good. There are definitely those covers that totally butcher the song, but then again, there are the acoustics like abottchen that are just outstanding.
It's true that with ayu's unique vocals, it can be extremely hard to cover her songs. I don't think it's worth attempting unless you're 100% sure that you know what you're doing. I feel like her style is very rare and should be left untouched most of the time. But when people cover her songs without trying to sound just like her, but instead, add their own personal touch to it, the song can come out very nice.
