Kanashiku nakanai noni,
Namida ga kobareta no wa

Yasashi sa ni kaete kureta kara

Although I'm not weeping for sadness,
Tears are overflowing my eyes anyway
Just thinking of you hurts me, darkens me
Inside my chest, a scar is present,
gently altering from darkness
Rody...you forgot the no between oku and kizuato going from Japanese!

Hmmmm I have a strong feeling that kurai in "kurai ni" does not meant dark. First of all, it's a horrible grammatical mistake; adverb form of kurai is kuraku; I've never seen an i-adjective with a ni after it, even in songs. Second, the way she sings it, kurai ni is way too removed from the next line to be connected to it, I think. It has a much stronger link to the preceding itai. Therefore I have to conclude that the kurai must be the one that means "approximately." I was a little confused by this, but when I plugged in "omoi ga itai kurai ni" I got that kurai meant "to the extend to which" similar to hodo. That makes sense when you compare this usage of kurai with koro I think. koro is also "approximate" but it's used for time, and people often say "ano koro" and what not. So I'm thinking koro is a less specific version of toki and kurai is similarly a less specific version of hodo.

Dude I'm so stubborn, my instincts told me the wa was an a but I couldn't find anything plausible...didn't think to connect kizu and ato because I'm a stubborn bastard...

I'm not one to tell Japanese people how to speak their own language, but I have to trust my gut here. 変えて seems to usually take a direct object and there seems to be none here. That leads me to believe that it's either the "kaeru" meaning "return" (which means it would be kaette instead of kaete) or "exchange." But the one for "exchange" needs a direct object too, so I say it's this one: 返って meaning "return."

As for kimi no omoi ga itai, I was thinking along the lines of "your feelings hurt," but I like very much your interpretation too. There's gotta be one specific meaning but I'm not skilled enough to know which it is. Perhaps you are skilled enough to say your interpretation is the correct one with 100% confidence?

Oh, and I think when there's a kureta, that implies someone did something for the speaker.

So here's my two cents:

not crying sadly
yet tears overflowing
to the extent to which your feelings hurt.
[tears overflowing] because you permeated the scars within my chest
and because you returned to kindness (for me)

PS This song sounds so fresh to me! Yayyyyy Ayu!

OMG! I had a dream last night about her new songs and they were horrible! Something extremely weird and experimental again so I am glad to hear that my dream was not totally correct.

The song... IS BEAUTIFUL. Very calming and different - definately better than HEAVEN (yuck) and rainy day (got boring). I am so excited! It is so beautiful and peaceful. Ayu does not dissapoint.

I don't really want it to build up. It sounds like the chorus is playing in the CM so I think the other parts should be even more tranquil and serene.

Exactly. I like it because it is so simple yet so beautiful.

Your explanation sounds good, let's wait until we can hear the lyrics clearer or until masa or someone confirms it for us.

Quote:
悲しく泣かないのに涙がこぼれたのは
君の思いが痛いくらいに
僕の胸の奥の傷跡にしみこんで
優しさに変えてくれたから
kanashiku nakanai no ni namida ga koboreta no wa
kimi no omoi ga itai kurai ni
boku no mune no oku no kizuato ni shimikonde
yasashisa ni kaetekureta kara

I'm not an expert on translation, but this is my interepretation:

Even though I didn't cry sadly,
the tears are overflowing to the point that thinking of you hurts
the wounds soak into the depths of my heart,
because you changed kindness for me

However, some of the verbs and words (kurai ni, kaete) make me weary of my own translation.

The rest of the chorus might not be shown in the CM, but that's my take.

YES! I was hoping this song would be about crying.

Here is my translation. It's all one long sentence, really, explaining that Ayu wasn't crying because she was sad, but she was crying because she was touched by how kind someone who WAS sad was to her.

Quote:
悲しく泣かないのに 涙が零れたのは
君の想いが痛い位に 僕の胸の奥の
傷跡に染み込んだ 優しさに変えてくれたから

Kanashiku nakanai no ni Namida ga koboreta no wa
Kimi no omoi ga itai kurai ni Boku no mune no oku no
Kizuato ni shimi konda Yasashisa ni kaete kureta kara.

I'm not crying out of sadness, but the reason I brimmed with tears
Is that while your feelings were hurt, you turned it in to a kindness
Which seeped right through the scar in my heart.
Breakdown:

悲しく泣かないのに涙が零れたのは
Kanashiku nakanai no ni namida ga koboreta no wa
Sadly cry-not [no] although tears [top.] spilled fact-that [subj.]
I'm not crying out of sadness, but the reason I brimmed with tears

君の想いが痛い位に僕の胸の奥の傷跡に染み込んだ優しさに変えてくれたから
Kimi no omoi ga itai kurai ni boku no mune no oku no kizuato ni shimikonda yasashisa ni kaete kureta kara
You 's feelings [top.] painful to-the-extent me 's chest 's inside 's scar in permeated kindness into changed-for-me because
Is that while your feelings were hurt, you turned it in to a kindness which seeped right through the scar in my heart.

Sounds clearly like konde instead of konda to me; which one it is makes a HUGE difference grammatically, ne?

But I think your translation is overall more accurate than mine, evolusean. I agree that the purpose of the passage is to explain the reason for the crying.

Hmmm actually I dunno. These particular lyrics are hard to translate...hard to know what goes with what from my point of view.

PS, I agree with whoever said Ayu looked like Cher. I was horrified when the CM started playing! Overall, I think it's a cute commercial, though. I like the friends-of-the-bride-Ayu in the background, and how distressed they look when the screen is less than 28mm. ^^;

If I were those people, I wouldn't even listen to Ayu anymore.. D: Jeez..

I wonder what the definition of a "sentence" is in Japanese...or whether there is one at all.

Just heard it...it's very nice. Not ZOMG wow to me, but nice. But I can't wait to hear the whole thing!

About the piano...personally, I am not a big piano person. Most of the time I don't care about piano parts, so honestly, the piano doesn't get me excited. However, I really liked the melody, so that makes up for it. Haha, I was already trying to sing along the second time I heard it!

And purple Ayu was the best.
