Yeah it's called a "kigo" and it is a reference to the specific time of year that the haiku is taking place. They have multiple volumes of books that work like dictionaries that say what weeks of the year something like "firefly" represents.
In my Japanese lit class I mentioned how I wanted to write about seasons cause I always felt it was a prevalent topic in Japanese works and teacher even said she felt ashamed because that completely slipped her mind when she was suggesting topics but was something that was very obvious.
