There is no "full name" for an obi. It isn't an acronym, just people are spelling it that way for some reason. It actually originates from the part of a kimono called the obi, which is the belt-like part that holds the partings together. If you think about it, it goes around the side of the CD case in a similar manner, hence how it got the name.

Anyways, this is probably the fifteenth thread about obis. I can't tell you how many there have been, but I don't really care.

I used to throw them away because I just thought they were trash but now I regret doing that because they're kind of part of the display. I now put them inside the CD booklet's sleeve. I especially won't even buy a (used) Ayu single without the obi because with those there usually isn't any side insert showing the title anyways so I use the obi in its place.
