just because you can see japanese charactres doesnt mean you have japanese enabled in the programs. you can set it in your control panel if you are using windows XP (now i use windows vista so i can't retrace how to do it anymore). i vaguely remember it is in the control panel, then regional and language settings, then there is an option where you can choose what language to run your programs.

in vista, it is control panel -> regional and language options -> administrative -> change system locale. change it to japanese then you will see 浜崎あゆみ listed in the artist column, but since all your programs will be running in japanese, words in other languages may not be displayed correctly

Don't worry. That exact same text appears sometimes for me when I download Ayu stuff. I always just re-tag them in iTunes and fix it.

Sometimes computers spazz out with foreign artists names. I've had Japanese Ayu CDs with her name in English, Japanese and gibberish that comes up in symbols.

I think it's just something that happens from time to time. Just last week I got BoA's BEST&USA. The Japanese Best CD had all the artist and track info but the USA album listed "Track 1", "Track 2" etc by "Unknown Artist".

Sometimes, that just happens. Like, random symbols come up..just fix them. It's not really a problem.

Your computer doesn't have the capabilities to disbplay 2-bit characters. Those generally are characters more complicated than english letters. Things like umlauts, the little circle over the 'a' that I have no idea what its called, and all the other accent markings that I'm not familiar with. But particularly Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and all the other symbol based languages.

When your computer comes across these, it doesn't know how to display it, so it replaces them with something that it can display. Usually random letters, boxes, or question marks.

Older systems usually don't have this capability. I bought my laptop a year and a half ago, so it can display Japanese. The desktop in my house is older, so it doesn't have this capability. I'm actually surprised that you have Vista and you can't display 2-bit characters.

If you install the Japanese Language Pack, you'll be able to display them. idk how to do this though. Its just what the message says on the desktop.

Don't worry though. There's nothing wrong with the USB or anything. When you sync it to your iPod (or music device of your choosing), it shound display the kanji correctly. If it doesn't, and it bothers you that much, simply delete it and replace it with Romaji.
