^ It's weird because I've read that as well, but I've never thought she had a Minnie Mouse stereotypical voice. I thought it was much different. To me, the Morning Musume type groups were more typical of what westerners thought Japanese voices sounded like, so when I heard Ayu, I knew she was something special and different. She was not what I thought!

The first song I heard was Evolution and then i went to look up some stuff... she hadn't even released Memorial Address so it was all her other stuff, but what really grabbed me was the music... I noticed for some reason I liked CREA stuff at first, but the other stuff quickly grwe on me and now i just love the woman!

God that was so many years ago... My first Ayu song was Boys & Girls I thought her voice was slightly annoying but there was something very nice about it too like an unexplainable nice ring to it. To this day sometimes Ayu's voice depending on the song style can annoy me but I like her voice 90% of the time.

Really cutesy and not really my thing, since I heard her when I was mostly into J-rock and Vizual Kei.

The first original Ayumi song I heard was the same. I got a scare when it started with "YA YA YA YA!!!" lol, but the first time I heard Ayumi's voice was in a remix.
It was the Christmas holidays and I was bored out of my mind with my music collection. I came across a couple of Ayumi remixes by western remixers that I loved. I think it was the Thunderuss remix of "Trauma" and the Hex Hector remix of "Far Away". At first I was shocked that she was singing in Japanese! It may sound a little close minded, but I didn't think western remixers would remix songs in Japanese lol. I really couldn't stand her high pitched voice, and would cringe when she hit a high note, but I really loved the melody of the songs. Over time I got used to her voice and the rest is history =P

I'm not sure I had a distinct impression. I mostly loved the music.

I remember I just got into JPop. I checked JPopAsia.com and Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~ was number 1 at that time so I clicked it. I saw the cover and it horrified me. I hated her voice, thought it was typical and a bit rough. I ignored her for a while then I saw she was number 1 again with You were.../BALLAD. I gave her a another chance and check what I'm missing out and I was blown away with You were... it wasn't because her voice was awesome but it had something I couldn't explain and I started listening to her older stuff.

Well, I didn't pay it any attention really. I just noticed it was very high-pitched, but not negatively so. I just remember thinking "OMG THIS MELODY/ARRANGEMENT IS AWESOME!"

^ Yeah! Same story for me. I really don't like her vocals in POWDER SNOW (my first ayu song) but I loved the arrangement. I could predict every single tune. Then I was wondering how the song would sound like when kick's (drums etc) were added, and suddenly the song changed and became kinda upbeat, with the kicks.
The first ayu song I fell in love with was either Rule or Mirrorcle World. Rule for her strong vocals during the verse and Mirrorcle World for the arrangement really. Later on I began appreciating her vocals to, and eventually became addicted to it . So basically I fell in love with the arrangement (I loved evolution and some CREA songs in particular). I hated M and SURREAL back then, now I love those because I appreciate her SUPER-B vocals.Later on I began watching her live performances and that was when I really began appreciating her. She sounded so amazing live! And now, I'm a fan. lol, I've never been a 'fan' in my whole live . I have all her music and pv's on my computer.

I didn't think bad of it.
I was introduced to her via Dearest, so I thought she had this sweet voice (still think so). Thank goodness I wasn't introduced to her via her debut album... |

First song I heard was evolution...and I fell in love. Her voice was like nothing I had ever heard before. I immediately had to have more of Ayu's music and find out everything that I could about her.

The first time I ever heard Ayu's voice was when I heard Dearest, so naturally I thought her voice was very beautiful. It gave me goose bumps!

I hated her voice until glitter came out. It was too high-pitched for me. Even so, for a good year or so glitter & fated were the only songs by her I could stand. Eventually Bold & Delicious, fairyland, Voyage and Moments were added to that list and it continued to slowly expand.

It was the most distinctive voice. I couldn't believe I liked a voice that high pitched, and to date, I never get tired of hearing it. I love her voice and am convinced that the majority of her songs would suck if they were sung by anyone else.
