Katy's song sounds basic and recycled.

Gaga may be obnoxious and pretentious as hell and the song may be lower quality than some of her other stuff, but Katy's song has personality?
Its as safe as it gets. IMO, she's a textbook popstar with textbook songs (E.T. was a gem, though. THAT you can say is distinct in her discography) and Roar is more of her standard fare. Let's not pretend its something that it isn't
Just because a song is "safe" doesn't necessarily mean that it lacks personality. Personality does not imply that a song is out of the box. What I mean when I say that the song has personality is that I feel like Katy Perry is being genuine in the song. When I heard "Roar", I felt like I got a glimpse at who Katy is-- in other words, her personality. I'm not even going to pretend that "Roar" is unique or raw or anything like that, but neither is Lady Gaga's song.

I agree, being original or trying new directions don't always equal to having personality or making something that suits you. Doing an example, that's my issue with Rihanna: her songs are mostly very nice, with some real masterpieces here and there, but for me they don't reflect her as a person, no matter how good or ispired or new they are.
That said, Gaga did a very nice job with Born This Way album, she really tried something new and coherent, but Applause is safe (especially the chorus), just like Roar is. I already said both songs for me are not great, and pretty much at the same level, but I feel Katy did a better job with a song that suits her image perfectly, Gaga instead has not been up to all the hype she created around this song.
Anyway, I don't like Roar more because of all that, but because it's simply more to my taste.

She is just channeling older stuff (being it either Madonna, David Bowie, Britney Spears, Queen, Gwen Stefany, Elton John, Christina Aguilera, etc) without giving them much of her own most of the time. Her music is also very formulaic. Her image is far more outrageous and risky than her sound, and even so, even her image is not that much out of the box either.
Thisss so much.

Its not bland because its safe, its just devoid of personality in the way that it could be sang by any popstar it was given to. it has no real identity in that sense. applesauce is 3 minutes of egocentrism, but at least you know it could only be a Gaga song. I don't think alot of poopstars would take that song simply based on the lyrics, much less on the sound.
Its not groundbreaking -I've said that already. You'd just know where it comes from.

Now you've made me sound like a little monster *shudder*
thanks

That's the thing though; most other pop stars wouldn't take this song on, not because it's too Gaga sounding, but because it kinda sorta sucks. I know some fans are trying to say, "Oh, this song is about how her fans' applause saved her." Saved her from what, exactly? From her millions of dollars? I'm not trying to say that Lady Gaga doesn't have her own, personal struggles, but give me a break. That's not even how the song comes across-- it comes across as arrogant and is brought down by muddled lyrics that make little to no sense. If this is Lady Gaga's "personality" coming through, then count me out.

I do agree that Katy Perry's song could be sang by a slew of other pop artists, but I think that Katy brings something to the song too.
