This is how I see it:

- monochrome is already (figuratively) a single that the man was either given because Ayu requested it or he brought it on his own terms.
- Their relationship by this time has ended.
- When listening to the song, he cuts it just after its ending with the last lyric 'because I'm so strong.'
- He mutters 'yeah right' and throws the disc away.
- Which means Ayu wasn't strong enough or she was, as others have mentioned, self-deluding. Either way, the relationship failed.
