That's because straight is the norm. So an "icon" is assumed to be a straight icon.

It's kinda like here, someone of a different ethnicity is always labeled, like that japanese guy, that black girl, etc...but you never hear "that white guy."

You only say that because of the rainbow color. Just because it is rainbow colored doesn't mean it's a gay icon. And just because if you're gay and you like her doesn't mean it's a gay icon. eh I don't think it matters if she's a gay icon or not. Everyone enjoys her music. If she has a large number of gay fans, good for her and them.

Wow, I don't really hear it often, but then again you are in Cali and I am in KY...very different make-up of people here than there.

People shouldnt look at things and try categorizing them by anything. When Ayumi started her career she never filled out a form that said "What group will you be reaching out to". No. Ayumi is Singer/Musician, whos goal is to make music for everone/anybody.

Haha I never actually related some of Ayu's Rainbow-ness with gayness. O.o;; and yeh I'm gay but that just never entered my head for a single second until someone mentioned in this thread. I always thought they were just 'girly' (ie. liked by Ayu's main audience, teenage girls) than they were gay.

and what some people doesn't seem to get is a gay icon doesn't necessarily have more gay fans than straight fans. Honestly, it's very hard to outnumber straight people when gay people are only 5% or less of the entire human population. Gay icons are just something that we want to 'claim' as our own...something we can say is ours in this mostly straight world. It's about the same as having gay parades but you'll never see straight people having 'straight parades' because there's no need for such a thing.

edit: woah, I just looked at SEASONS' cover again. I have to say it's more than a coincidence that Ayu had that tee with the rainbow and 'G' on it...it's definitely a message or something. Of course it doens't make her a gay icon...I don't think such a thing actually exists in Japan anyways.

actually the rainbow cover pic is very gay. the rainbow song sounds very gay too. i think it is to do with all the heavy vocals and stuff. and of course the video is so lesbian

You seem so offended. The fact is that homosexuality and rainbows for whatever reasons have become somewhat related. Hence why Rainbow and AUDIENCE look so gay to me.
