It's not for me to say because I don't live in Japan, but it could be the fact that 'fairyland' was over-promoted. It had what, 4 tie-ups? And the chorus does get verrry tiresome after awhile, and they started promoting at the end of June. And while 'alterna' did get a LUMIX CM, it was still not promoted as well as previous c/w songs (GAME, is this LOVE?). So I don't think this has anything to do with Ayu's popularity declining, but a combination of bad marketing by Avex and a mediocre song by Ayu.
